Photographer's Note

This place is located close to my hometown of Yekaterinburg (former Sverdlovsk) and is named "Ganina pit" which in 1918 was a mine. This sad story in the history of my country goes back to July 1918 when the whole family, including personal doctor Botkin, servants and children, of the last russian Emperor Nikolai II Romanov was killed and thrown into this mine to prevent any recovery and identification.
It took more than 50 years for historians, archeologists, volunteers and people to search archives, tones of documents in Russia and foreign countries to find this place, recover and identify remains, performs dozens of different analysis in numerous laboratories and scientific centres around the globe to finally declare - yes, it is the family of the last russian Emperor.
Nowadays this place is being visited by many people from all over the country and abroad, it has large memorial complex with photos, memorabilia, documents, notes, clothes, armory...
