St-Petersburg is get used to deluges, in 305 years of it's history there were 302 deluges, including two great ones - in 1825 and 1924. Thus shores of the rivers and channels are granite-clad, hundreds of years of work ended in hundreds of kilometers of granite embankments, average height of which is 4 meters.
Embankments are like promenades, you can walk along Neva River by 15 kilometers along one of the longest one.
