Photographer’s Note
"In the summer 1323 comes Novgorodians with a Prince Yuri Danilovich on Neva and placed a city on the orifice of Neva on the Nuts Island; at that time arrived great ambassadors from King of Sweden, and a treaty was sealed, about eternal peace and old tolls...". - that's what medieval chronicles tell.
River Neva is not very usual one, it have no common source, actually it starts at the great Ladoga Lake and ended at Baltic Sea. At the end of the river stands Saint-Petersburg, and at the beginning, on the Nuts island, stands ancient fortress Oreshek (Shliesselburg). Founded in 1323, it was several times rebuilded, taken by Swedens in 1612 and retaken by Russians, under the command of Peter I himself, in 1702.
In XVIII and XIX century fortress become a prison. Since 1928 it's a museum.
On the photo is Golovina Tower, overlooking whole wideness of Neva at its beginning.
