Photographer’s Note

Ancient fortress Koporye was founded in 1240 by Teutonic Order knights. Soon army from Great Novgorod burned it down, but later, in 1280 Novgorodians placed here new stronghold. From its high towers watchers studied the Baltic Sea, and if some fleet approached Russian shores, it was seen on a distance of 70 kilometers. So Novgorod was secured from unexpected visits of Swedes, Teutonic Knights, Dans or anyone else. Nowadays sea retreated very far from its former shore, but in nice weather still can be seen from Koporye towers.
On the photo is wild and empty land between old fortress and shore of Baltic Sea. 100 kilometers to the West from Saint-Petersburg.
