Крепость Порхов, основана в 1239 году Александром Невским, единственная из крепостей Северо-Запада, сохранившая полностью средневековый облик, то есть существенно не перестроенная к моменту появления огнестрельного оружия. Тем не менее, выдержала осады литовских внязей Ольгерда и Витовта, а также польского короля Стефана Батория.

Ancient fortress Porhov, one less known among 7 medieval strongholds around Saint-Petersburg and Novgorod.
Founded by Prince Alexander Nevsky in 1239 on the river Shelon. Walls that now still stands built in year 1387.
Main task of the stronghold was to stop the expansion of Lithuanian princes, and fortress was beseiged by Lithuanians twice: in 1346 by Great Prince Olgerd, and in 1428 by Vitovt. King of Poland Stephan Batorius beseiged fortress in 1581.
