Small church of Repose of the Virgin on Volotovo Field near Novgorod. It was built in year 1352 by Archbishop Moisey, severely damaged by German artillery during WW II. Church was repaired in 1990-s by Ministry of Culture of Russia and German company "Wintershall".
This was made as a sign of the final end of all kinds of bad blood and using of history for political means between two countries.
And that's how the history, even most gruesome and sad, have to be treated: as history.

Hallo from Germany!
Here I nearly like the note better than the picture!
Again a beautiful church building (your "supply" seems to be endless ;-) surrounded by a churchyard. I would have prefered to see more of these graves there. Nevertheless, I like this contribution!
Frank (my today's church is a bit bigger ;-)

I like this photograph in your series of Orthodox photographs. I get the sense that it is somewhat tilted, but the positive aspects and the note make up for any shortcomings. Behind the wrought iron fences, it appears, are gravestones?!? Have a good weekend,
PS I received from Stanislav a note, and an image of the cover of the Russian edition of 'Math and the Mona Lisa.' He was responding to either your note or one from Kristina in Belaruse. In any event, thank you very much for interceding on my behalf. It turns out that two years ago he wrote and asked me to write a foreword for the Russian edition, and I never got his note. Then last year the book was published, and he is sending me a couple of copies. Meanwhile, I am going to send you and Kristina a copy each of the original English edition of the book. An international book fair will take place in London next week. Stanislav wants to meet the representative of National Geographic Books about publishing the new book in Russian. He did not know about the new book that will soon be published.
