During my 10 day trip to St. Petersburg, i decided to pay a one day trip to the famous medieval city of Novgorod, which is a UNESCO heritage site. Despite the cold (less then 10 degrees), rainy and windy August weather, it was a great decision and a life time experience. The photo was taken during a rare sunshine through the clouds. Here you can see two of the churches in the Ancient Market Area behind "Yaroslav's Court". Thanks to UNESCO funding, the buildings are still in good shape despite their ca. 700 yeears old age.

Tu as bien raison, c'est aussi ma lumière préférée. Un ciel très noir et le soleil dans le dos. Une chance aussi que ces chapelles soient dans la ligne de tir. Un vrai bonheur.

Deniz, you chose the right place in the right time. The upcoming storm created perfect light conditions and enhanced the vivid colors. Well done!

C'est vrai que cette lumière est superbe. avec le contaste du ciel noir.
Bien vu et belle présentation

Hello Denisz ,
This really was a great moment to capture these outstanding old churches : the light and the stormy sky are fantastic . The picture is very well composed , too .
williewhistler (15571) 2013-08-03 5:58
you did very well to grab the window of opportunity to get this most atmospheric of shots.
The all important light has illuminated the Churches perfectly.
Very nice composition and clarity.
krzychu30 (15510) 2013-08-03 6:36
indeed, the sky right above the church seems to have some kind of heavenly in itself.Definitely adds unique, mystical feeling to the scene. So the interplay of light and architecture couldn´t be much more expressive here.
Nicely composed and processed image!
Graphics is really superb!
Have a good weekend

So what was it like visiting Russia, sounds very intriguing!! Especially once you get out of the major cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburgh.
Is it suppose to be that cold there in August?????
Guess it worked out because you got some fine atmospheric conditions, the stormy clouds look awesome, as does the lighting.
Fine colors and subjects.
See you around

700 years old, wow. They are in beautiful condition, and you have presented them under such beautiful and magical lighting here. The sky looks fluid and its dark tones enhance the mood and drama and is a perfect compliment to the bright buildings. Love this, cheers

Beautiful churches with a very dramatic sky behind. The sunshine on the white buildings create a very attractive contrast to the background. A well composed picture!
holmertz (45239) 2013-08-03 11:49
The small churhes are beautiful and the light falling on the one to the left is superb. Judging from the very mean looking clouds the fine light didn't stay long. I love the dark colours and strong contrasts.

It seems your back... and this is a great shot to be back with since as you say it has great light and colours. Nicely captured.

It is my dream to got to St. Petersburg and Novgorod, but it seems it is for me easier to go to Australia. Lifetime experience? Woow. The photo looks very dramatic. Wonderful light, like before the storm. Nice churches, it seems that there is only one part of the church on the right side.
I am very curious about your trip to the place not known on TE :)
have a great Sunday

So you're back...but from where?
This pic is from last year! A fine picture at that especially with the dark clouds over the white churches...Its interesting how you captured the light & shade...that's key to the beauty!
What holiday plans?
Have a great Sunday!

it's amazing how stormy weather can sometimes provide a most wonderful light for photos. Your picture is such a case. Beautiful compo with the menacing sky emitting heavenly light on the old churches below. Lovely peaceful landscape.
Technically I think something went wrong during your post-processing though. I find the greens oversaturated a tiny bit but I wouldn't nag about that because it's a matter of taste. But what are those large and uneven black areas with the big spots of pixelation on the trees? If you enlarge the picture they're more than evident. Looks like some bug with lifting the shadows.
Hope you don't mind me being honest, the picture's beautiful.

Exceptional capture with perfect light and balance. It always helps to have nature put on a light show with stormy clouds and sun shining on the subject. Congratulations and well done Deniz!

Perfectly timed shot. A beautiful but haunting scene at the same time. Excellent accompanying note as well. Regards

very good shot in better light.
how are you my friend?:)
Bartleby (13552) 2013-08-05 2:14
strong contrasts and indeed a beautiful light...which makes this an attractive picture.
EstudioChispa (2144) 2013-08-05 12:11
You must have a direct phone line to the couds -- "please shine the sunlight HERE!"
We are friends, so may I ask whether the white building on the right is superfluous? Given your well-earned reputation for the tight crop, I would not have been surprised to see this image in a square format, showing only the left church, the tree, and the (awesome!) sky.

merhaba deniz ~
talk about globetrotters... so, you were in st petersburg?!
i'm looking forward to seeing what else caught your eye.
you really are the master of intense colors, in addition to many other things, and this one is no exception. those buildings have a beautiful luminosity set against the lush dark greens and that extraordinary sky. despite the cold, you were lucky indeed with that lighting. I would love to see details of the stones of the church in the foreground, they bring a lovely warmth to this photograph.
nice to have you posting again :)

Hello Deniz - This is the kind of light I would love to be able to summon up on request, it is so beautiful and adds incredible atmosphere to a photograph. The intensity of colour and contrast here is wonderful, the white walls just glow. Marvelous shot. Warm regards Rosemary
willperrett (8303) 2013-08-09 1:23
Great drama here! You've certainly caught a meteorological "decisive moment". I wonder if you've "added" to the drama of the sky, or whether it was really this Armageddon-like.
adidas5nb (5685) 2013-08-10 19:25
wow..thats an exceptional capture with amazing surreal light and great colors.love the pov and the contrast of the green grass and grey sky.
marabu61 (9501) 2013-08-11 4:40
This is indeed a wonderful and moody light here. The warmth of the rare sun on the church agains the dark and foreboding sky creates a lovely effect.
People always look at me like I am from mars when I tell them that I find a blue sky boring, but I really do prefer a stormy sky, it creates that superb effect ever so often.
have a great sunday

Selam sevgili Deniz,
Mükemmel bir kare, muhteşem bir gökyüzü !
jhm (144268) 2013-08-13 4:55
Long time ago that I saw a picture of you.
We get a very bad weather picture with imminent cloud to the sky, but the building cares for colour.
Technical perfect, your angle choice excellent.
Depth and perspective excellent done.
Very well done, TFS.

Merhaba dear Deniz
Welcome back, you have been missed! I trust that you had a wonderful time in Russia. The light here is quite extraordinary, such a contrast between the threatening grey sky and the luminous colours of the grass and edifices. I find that grey skies often have the supernatural effect on colours and here you have obtained it to the max. A pity that you experienced such a cold summer there, but you have certainly made the most of these unusual weather conditions. Excellent work, thanks for sharing.
Have a lovely day
eldancer1 (32051) 2013-10-11 7:41
Yes, the light coming through those dark clouds appears to be message from heaven. I like the contrast between the will lit church buildings against the stormy clouds. Nicely captured with sharp details. Well done, tfs.
boa (6429) 2013-11-03 9:03
the amazing light in this scene is what first caught my attention. Really heavy skies but with a beautiful light at the same time. Interesting architecture and attractive colors, Tfs!
Have a nice Sunday.
josepmarin (57947) 2013-11-04 12:56
the special light on the first church is the real eye-catcher in your good composition, because of its strong contrast with the threatening clouds in the sky.
I like the chromatic quality and the sharpness of the image, and the beauty of this religious architecture, as well.
A beautiful work.

I see you have had so interesting tour around the Russian North West regions. Good composition, amazing contrast of holy house and so dramatic sky...
I can't understand, I have some problem with my monitor or what happened with this tree? I see the black holes or pixels ...
