Photographer’s Note

Resurrection cathedral in Starocherkasskaya, located about one hour away from Rostov on the Don. Now a sleepy village, Starocherkasskaya was once the capital of the Don Cossacks before their leader Matvei Platov moved it to Novocherkassk in 1805 because it was prone to flooding. The Don Cossacks were basically a bunch of people, mostly Russian peasants, who fed up with being enslaved, fled to live on the margins of the Russian empire. The need to defend themselves led them to organize a military society, originally at odds with Russia, but with time they fought alongside Russia against the latter's enemies. They were pretty good at fighting and now occupy an important place in Russian folklore.
