Photographer’s Note
Whilst spending a day in Listvyanka we caught the ferry across the Angara River. This old boat was docked in Port Baikal just where the Angara River flows out of Lake Baikal.
The Angara River is the only river which flows out of Lake Baikal - 336 rivers flow in. Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake at 1637metres - and growing as it is formed by rifting tectonic plates. Lake Baikal is 636kms from north to south but only 60kms wide and holds nearly a fifth of the world's fresh unfrozen water.
I have post-processed this photo through a pseudo HDR program and I really liked the resulting effect. However there is no hiding of the gloomy day nor the remoteness of the location.
PS In a workshop, following Elena's suggestion, I have posted the original photo.

Privet, Marlene,
Interesting information, I love Baikal's Nature. In 1990th I lived in Transbaikal region (Buryatia) and I miss this part of Russia.
Why did you posted this rusty constructions here?
Warm regards,

Bonjour Marlene
La rouille va faire son travail sur les couleurs.Un sujet photogénique mais quelle triste fin pour ce bateau.
Bonne journée

Hello Marlene,
On opposite sides of the world, but almost neighbours today.
This is a rusty piece of junk but with some fantastic colours and amazing details. I wouldn't call it a beautiful sight, but it teaches me something about the world. There is a very pleasant softness of the light and colours that I suppose is a result of your processing technique.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Marlene,
as I see, opinions about this photo differ in this or that way... and TE members are sort of curious why you posted this shot... so let me add my two (or three.... or five ;)) cents here.
1) I've never made any HDR photos and I don't even know how to do it (imagine that??), so whatever you have done to this photo looks very good, IMHO: impressive colours which, all together, create a curious palette - but all of them are in good harmony with each other.
2) I'm looking at this photo, perhaps, more like a painter rather than a photographer, so I assess mostly the "emotional effect" in this case.
3) who said that a "rusty piece of junk" can not become a creative piece of art? ;) Very well chosen POV, well balanced composition, and the atmosphere looks appropriate.
4) I have not lived in those areas a single moment, but I think it is very easy to find similar "pieces junk" somewhere around Moscow Region not far from the Moskva river.
5) That's why I like TE so much: loads of opinions, and each member sees the same thing differently! that's also learning about the world (the people, not only the places and objects), isn't it??
6) it would be interesting to look at the original photo... :)
7) verdict: I like it! I don't know why but I like it very much.
Best greetings from already very hot sunny Moscow,
Elena

Your good pp brought up very nice colours. The picture is very sharp and shows extremely well the poor condition of that old peace of junk. Well done.

Hi Marlene.
Interesting photo and notes, and judging from the WS a good treatment of the shot. The isolated atmosphere is strong, with the colours not taking anything away from the overall effect, and the detail on the vessel sharply shown. It looks rather rusty, close to decrepitude, and no doubt things like this were or are responsible for the pollution of the lake. I like the close-up view in this case, with the setting being evoked just enough with the small amount of background included.
I spent a night in Irkutsk a very long time ago while travelling on the Trans Siberian train, when the iron curtain was well and truly still in place. It seemed an infinitely long way from anywhere in those days.

Andrew

Hi Marlene,
An interesting note and a very interesting picture! However, the most interesting thing here has been to compare this photo with the "original" WS and to study the PP work you have done. In my opinion you have found a good level of colour saturation!
Kind regards

Hello Marlene,
Your photo is like a painting. The rusty thing looks even a bit too colourful after your pseudo dynamic range treatment. I just try a bit more conventional approach. Hope you like it too.

Hi Marlene,
compared with the original version this is fantastic photo work! The bright colors emphasize the “character” of this boat (which has a kind of soul, I am sure). It is not only this boat that is exciting, the comments and critiques are also fascinating. A great contribution to this site!
Warm regards

dear Marlene,
this atmosphere of old, rusty and partially broken boats is my favorite.
in my feeling, not by the HDR program, we can get nice effect like this picture.
(to select each portion with brightness and contrast, then to adjust those by each condition )
anyway, this cloudy sky matches these boats very well, it is really effective.
thank you,
Akihisa

Marlene, the processing you did on this one has turned out a really fine quality photo, the fact that the note is in itself great and that the subject is very interesting just adds to the overall effect which is awesome, great stuff.
