Photographer's Note

Well, this is ... just a shot! a shot of the sun.
Oh, please, add to this shot the smell of smoke due to forest and peatbog fires around Moscow..

Everything around is dry... dry leaves on the ground; yellow dry grass. The city is gradually losing its green colour.
What are we going to expect next?

At the time of the shot it was +36C outside; +31C inside. For Moscow such weather is absolutely abnormal.
Moscow is like a huge boiling pot these weeks ( I wouldn't say days!)

You can almost easily look at the sun because it's behind a layer of smoke mixed with clouds.

I've already forgotten what is the natural colour of the sky over Moscow :(

The title was inspired by the movie "Soleil Rouge" (Red Sun) made in 1971.

No filters were used for this shot, I just shot in RAW and adjusted the exposure when preparing the photo for posting. I did my best to preserve the natural colours - just as they were at the time of the shot.

For those who are curious what adjustments I've made to the RAW file in Photoshop:

temperature: 4400, tint -2;
exposure: +1,05;
recovery: 100;
full light: 33;
clarity: +84;
vibrance: +6;
saturation: +6.

NB: oops!! the exif info of the shot says the shot was taken at 18:27.
I'm sorry! I forgot to adjust the clock in the camera to Moscow time after I returned from my holidays!
So the exact time of the shot is 20:27.

Hi Elena,
Your Canon seems to enjoy the nature, in its raw form ,which inspires you to click in the hot conditions, with dry leaves and the smoke hiding the glares of the Sun. If the timming is 20.27, this means the evening is over and the night is knocking the door.....so is this the picture of dawn from Moscow, or is it the Industrial smoke overpowering the Moscow Sun!!
In all the shot attarcted, the moment i logged in to TE.

For extreme heat, hanging over Central Russia it is a very relevant picture. You must hold out for another week and the heat starts to decline. And I hope to see from you the blue sky and green leaves.

We read about the extreme heat wave in Russia and about all the disastrous forest fires around Moscow. This is indeed a very current document of your situation. This is a very strange and weird picture. At the same time a very good photo, well composed and with good colours. You could send some of the warm air a bit west, we are having mostly rain here...

I really like sunny days, but 36 degrees..and for weeks.It must be really hard ! Let's hope for cooler weather very soon. You have captured a good symbol for the heat in Russia, the sun ! I can almost feel the heat, it is well composed also.

A strange and sadly beautiful picture, more looking like a poetic Japanese painting than a photo from Moscow. The Russian fires keep us quite busy at my office these days. I do hope for your sake, and ours, that we will be able to report about nicer things in the near future. We've had a lot of rain in Sweden recently. I would be only too happy to send it to Russia.

Conditions could be (much) better from your health, but at least you could get an image to remember this special summer, good framing to get a balance between the 2 main elements. Cover your mouth and nose and drink !

Hi Elena.
A very striking and apparently lovely artistic picture, very minimalist. But yes, it could be another planet, that smoky pink sky and half-blocked sun. We see this too often here, when there are huge bushfires. One can almost feel the heat.
Nicely balanced, the two subjects, and the sharpness of the foliage conveys its fragility.
Ah, the dreaded 'I forgot to adjust the time on my camera' syndrome! Don't we all do that?

Hi Elena,
The heat there has indeed been something exceptional and the forest fires horrific. It also must a awful pain and a big health risk for the people to breath the smoke, which just continues to fill the air there according to our news.
Your photo while documenting the situation is also a beautiful one, well composed and artistic.
We have also got our share of the heat coming from your direction. An all time high temperature record in Finland was broken late July in the eastern Finland (37.2 °C now). Rains have been minimal. Yesterday was the first rain day in ages in Espoo.

I remember only once temperature reaching 36 celsius here in my high town, and it was very bored. Anyway our houses are more prepared for hot days than to colder days like nowadays. here you got a nice image, full of beauty, full of information about the problem, the image looks like some central brazilian towns that are covered with smoke during august too. nice compo

Elegant simplicity in this composition, with only the silhouetted branch to compliment the sun!
But the background is tragic, with the draught and accompanying fires...
Weather wise this has been a year out of the ordinary, starting with long periods of extreme cold in my place..!
