Photographer’s Note

I hope you are waiting for more pictures from me and I would like to say sorry for some break with uploading my new photos, because of I was pretty busy with my work. More and more tourists and businessmen coming to Russia, Moscow, and fortunately my business, as a Moscow personal guide and driver is growing up year by year.

I would like to continue the story and photos from the small village Ubory with it's very attractive church of the Saviour. The church is the one of the best examples of Naryshkin baroque style of architecture and decoration, which was fashionable in Moscow at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Here is some interesting info about this church from the excellent book "Discovering the Moscow Countryside" written by Kathleen Berton Murrell:

"The glorious soaring red brick tower with contrasting stone lace-like ornamentation set on a promontory above the Moskva can be seen for miles around. The cube which supports the upper tiers rises out of the four petal-like symmetrical lobes which form the three entrances and the apse linked by a broad open terrace. Above the cube rise two receding octagonal towers - the upper containing the bells - bearing the drum and elegant, slim cupola with the tall cross. The tires, windows and columns are richly embellished with elaborate stone carvings of vines and plants. The church, restored in the 1950s, has recently reopened for worship. Regrettably, the elaborate eight-tier iconostasis disappeared long time ago."
