Photographer’s Note

In the small village, called "Ubory", which is about about 40 km to the West from Moscow city, not far from town Odintsovo, you can see the beautiful church of the Saviour, which is proudly rising to the sky over the hill, located nearby the Moskva-Reka (Moscow-River). Impressive bright colors of the church attracts the eye contrasing with the trees, sky and clouds. My picture "Road to the Moscow Countryside" was taken riht nearby the church, but towards to different side...

I thought that it could be interesting for you to learn the meaning the word "Ubory (noun, plural) Ubor (noun, singular)", and I have I made an attempt to translate the description for this old Russian world from the Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian living Language written by V.I. Dal in 1863-1866:

"Everything, that can be used as embellishment, dressing, finery. A headdress with feathers, flowers. Full turquoise finery, earrings, necklace, wrists and so forth. Examples: he has put on hunting "ubor" (headdress); Turkish riding "ubor" (harness)."

The glorious soaring red brick church with contrasting stone lace-like ornamentation, which was built by talanted architect Yakov Bukhvostov from 1694 to 1697 for Petr Sheremetiev-Menshoi (the Younger), symbolises the forward-looking policies of Peter the Great. This church is the one of the best examples of Naryshkin baroque style of architecture and decoration, which was fashionable in Moscow at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
