Photographer’s Note

The bronze Pozharsky and Minin monument stands in front of St. Basils Cathedral in Red Square, Moscow.

This statue commemorates Prince Dmity Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin who gathered an all Russian volunteer army and expelled the Poles from the Moscow Kremlin which put an end to the "Times of Troubles" in 1612. The monument was unveiled in 1818. It originally stood in the centre of Red Square with Pozharsky waving his hand towards the Kremlin. In 1936 after the construction of Lenin's mausoleum it was moved to a small garden in front of St. Basils as it interfered with Stalin's plans for massed military parades in Red Square.
