St. Basil's Cathedral Photo

Photographer’s Note

Another picture of The St. Basil's Cathedral. No surprise, the church draws attention of majority of the people attending the Krasnaya Plojadi in Moscow. It was built upon the order of Russian Tsar Ivan Groznyj in honour of Kazan capture. A memorial to Dmitry Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin in front of the church was added to the complex later on to mark the battles with Polish troops occuping Russia.

Although one can find the church complex is an aglomeration of styles, it looks gorgeous and beautiful

An excellent image. The colors of St Basil's are so clear and bright the church jumps off the screen. Exposure is spot on, excellent DOF and sharpness. These type of images usually look better when captured with a bit of light still in the sky but this one really works with the dark sky. Well done!!

I am always impressed bu this church and it's structures and colours on the roofs. Those people should not be there so the focus was on the church itself, but thanks for the sharp picture.

I have always been fascinated by churches and cathedrals and this one is truly gorgeous. The shapes and colors clearly make this one of the most beautiful cathedrals that I have ever seen. TFS.

This is an amazing image.
I think I would prefer it without the people but the cathedral is breathtaking.

Olá Iaroslav, yes it is gorgeous and beautiful. It almost seems not real, as if it was a toy for kids: those roofs could be candies and the children could go there and taste a bit of each one. A fascinating architecture very well captured at night. The contrast with the dark sky is great. Very well done!

i have seen this cathedral so many times in photos representing the russia but not at night and in this way. it looks like a toy or a castle in a phantasy land. i was young when i visited this place but yo useem to have taken me back there! :)

Собор смотрится как игрушечный на этой фотографии, особенно на фоне вечернего освещения.
Пожалуй, эта первая фотография собора здесь, на ТЕ, которая заслуживает внимания. Остальные до скуки однообразны, а эта выделяется из общего ряда..

The colours of the bulbs are really fabulous! The cathedral looks like a giant christmas crib, and the sculpture like the santons. Concerning the compo, I personnaly would have tried to avoid the people in the front, which was probably difficult at the time of an event.

Hello Iaroslav,

I am happy that I had not critiqued this shot which I have long admired. Now I can do it earnest. This is quite simply the finest photograph of Saint Basil's Cathedral that I have ever seen. The night shots, are one of your specialties, but then, some of your daytime shots, such as the canal and bridge in Amsterdam are also beautiful. In this picture showing the people milling about creates a virtual stage setting, with the great cathedral providing the backdrop. I saw Saint Basil only once, on a bleak day on an overnight flight from Odessa thirty years ago. (I believe Brezhnev was the Head of State). I had no idea that proper lighting and restoration of the cupolas would reveal such vivid colors.

This image, though we have seen her often, always surprises for his beauty and his explosion of colors.
You have caught her perfectly, it is a good night capture, with a good work with the exposure and a great graphical result.

Hey Iaroslav,

I wanted to visit this place, looks whimsical due to the 'opaqueness' of the colours used in their exterior applications. I like the 'soft' evening feel here, a festive mood, indeed a beutiful sight!
