Photographer’s Note

This was taken from Apulit Island in Palawan. This is particularly interesting because the constellation Crux (Southern Cross) is adjacent to the lighted cross on the top of a limestone cliff. This was indeed a lucky shot, having only been told that the constellation appears somewhere there, we woke up at dawn to see it right there with the big cross.

If the constellation looks familiar, it is because it appears on the flag of Australia, being a navigational beacon for sailors in travelling the southern hemisphere in the absence of Polaris, the North Star.
