Today's the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, so here's a scene that struck me when I stayed in Manila.
I took this photo while riding in a car in Manila. The contrasts of living are really striking there, after modern sky-rises and shopping centers you can come across cardboard shacks like that. I can't imagine people living in such appalling conditions and even worse.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993, when the General Assembly designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries, particularly in developing countries.
At the Millennium Summit, world leaders committed themselves to cutting by half by the year 2015 the number of people living in extreme poverty — people whose income is less than one dollar a day.
October 17 presents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard.

is impressive to see how much poverty still exists in the world.
This photo shows the slums of Manila and the rule of life with the clothes hanging out to dry near a river that is used for the collection of waste.
Thank you for sharing.

Shanty town that many would like to ignore even to the gov officials. They are so used to 'beauties' and luxury but it does exist before their eyes, such a sad situation, and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty campaign is of no use here and nothing will happen for the better. Poverty and opulence is present side by side as you mentioned is a reality. This is a remarkable image, you've done a very good job here. The photo shows exactly what you want it to show, without needing much explanation. I particularly like your composition providing a much more visually interesting subject and all the specks of colorful nitty gritty emphasizng the squalor of this shanty town. Relatively bright 'green' water areas in the fg attract the viewer's eye and the exposure is well handled with excellent detail throughout. Adequate clarity given the condition and good contrast between foreground and the sky area and the sad looking out of place lone palm tree. Excellent street photo well presented. Congrats

A bit chaotic, but a true view of the place, Marina, no disguise - this is really how it looks in natural tones.
A "busy" and yet impressive picture. well rendered the "feel" over the place.
