Boracay Island is home to the indigenous people called the Atis. Boracay was then called “Land of the Atis” because the first settlers of the island are the Negritos or Atis. They are nomadic, have dark-colored skin and curly hair, and are short – people who inhabited the Island long before it was became a tourist attraction.
The Atis farmed and fished in Boracay for centuries. Today, the Island is fast changing into a modern city and the Ati people are faced with the reality of having to cope with this new world in order to survive, while claiming their rights and their own culture.
