Photographer’s Note

i am not sure if this big bird is a male emu. it's colorful neck and face caught my attention while on a visit to the city's pasonanca park aviary. right after i took this shot, it chased me and i ran (i didn't come back to check on the sign post that bore its identity). i am a loser!
pasonanca park is a must-see for anybody visiting my native zamboanga city. bienvenidos ala ciudad de zamboanga hermosa!

correction as of august 12, 2006-
this is not an emu but rather a cassowary. it is a flightless bird up to 170cm tall with hard and stiff plumage, a brown casque, blue face and neck, red nape and two red wattles hanging down its throat. the 3-toed feet are thick and powerful, equipped with dagger-like claw on its inner toe. the female is dominant and larger with longer casque and bright colors. IUCN has listed them a threatened specie. native to australia, new zealand, papua new guinea and indonesia.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum : Chordata

Order : Struthioniformes
Family : Casuariidae
Genus : Casuarius
Specie : Casuarius casuarius
