I went on a solo backpacker trip to Coron Island in the province of Palawan, Philippines last week, and this is what I discovered…a gorgeous paradise called Malcapuya Island. The surrounding water is crystal clear and corals and various marine life abound on this beach. It is an ideal place to swim and snorkel, and just chillax.
And although I was so happy to discover and see this place, I was sad at the same time for I learned that the island was already bought by Henann Group of Resorts, the same group that developed the Boracay Regency Beach Resort and Spa. And why am I sad?...because they will turn this beautiful island into a private resort, and so guests are no longer free to visit the island, swim and snorkel! Eventually, they will charge a hefty amount of cash just to set foot on this island. Privatizing the island may be good news to some for the comfort it will bring as long as they have the cash to burn, it may also mean “very good business” for big multinational resort owners and developers, and… “may also mean some good news for the local economy” of Coron…but I am pretty sure that the big resorts will have their sizeable share of “development” compared to the speck of benefit it will bring to the local people of Coron. I feel sad because fewer people would get to bear witness to the wonderful beauty of this gorgeous island. I feel sad because it was once FREE FOR ALL. I feel sad, because it will be closed off from the public in a few years time. (Well, it’s still free up to this time….but time is running out).
I hope to be back there again in December, and the following years thereafter, until construction of the private resort has not fully commenced…or until I, an ordinary mortal, have access to it.

Hello Mics ,
I can understand your sadness : what a pitty that this wonderful white sand beach will be privatized ! This place seemed to be so wild and unspoilt .
We have the chance , in France , that it is forbidden to privatize the seashore .
Thanks for the share .

Ciao e buona settimana

What a lovely corner of paradise ! Just like Denis, I can understand your anger and disappointment about this tragedy, but don't you think the government is going along with this decision ? If the place had been declared a protected space, no property developer could get permission to build anything on this island. You took a lovely shot of this little paradise with what makes this kind of view so appealing : the white sandy beach, the crystal-clear turquoise waters, the coconut trees... Excellent viewpoint and beautiful natural colours. The FG branches frame this beautiful scene perfectly. Well done.

Nice view of beautiful white sand beach and the turquoise sea. Excellent framing with the trees, it gives me a feeling that I am discovering this piece of paradise. But I read from your note that some people with sacks of money has already earmarked this for minting more money. In this materialistic world everything sells. Very sad.
I hope the poor people of this region benefit from this project, that would be of some solace at least.
Excellent photo of a spectacular place, thanks for sharing.

Paradise is up for sale, it seems. I agree with you: such a shame that a large company can just take over a whole environment. I wonder what happens to the people that live on the island? For now though, it looks tranquil and beautiful. Next year there will be a multi-storey hotel in the frame.

That's a beautiful picture of a paradisiacal place!
How sad it's days as a paradise for anyone are counted...
The tree branch frames your composition very nicely, and leads the eye towards those lovely colours of the sea and beach... complete with palm trees!
It seems like normal mortals will soon only be able to enjoy your photo...
