Photographer’s Note
This Photo was taken during my stay at an old run-down resort in Gasan, My dad's friend used to own it, but moved on to work elsewhere.. It has totally been run down, Early in the morning as we awoke, the local Gasan kid's where running around playing, They all came up to us and where curious, and yes, they asked for some spare peso's. Better to give something to them, then them to take it (sad but true, from past experiences) and what is the peso's to me.. nothing compared to them. These lively kid's all had a great time talking to us, and posing for some other pictures.. alway's fun.
We all had a back/forward flip contest too :) hahha, i lost again, like alway's heheh. They spent most of the morning in front of the resort, from what i would think, they go along the few beach resort's in this area and ask for some spare money.. as i could see, some had fairly loaded pockets..
As alway's, they where a happy bunch.. that really made us smile, such nice and happy face's and people, putting behind the poverty and dire circumstances in their life, and making the best of their day (hence the title, 'making the best of it') and childhood. Like some say, The Filipino Live's By the day.
The only editing to the picture, was obviously BW, before you ask, the original (colours) just didn't seem right to the story and meaning of this scene.. well to me. I have posted on the workshop, the original photo with all the colours, It would be great to see your opinion's on which you prefer, if you do say which one you prefer, all i ask is you explain why, so i can at least learn from it, as i am new to BW photo's. thank's if you can! it's much appreciated.
Other than that, all i did was crop it a bit.. that was it. nothing else.
I aimed at capturing this happy moment, in these children's lives.. I hope it is good enough.
Thanks for viewing.

Hi Thomas. This is a wonderful shot. At first sight crop is through the boys heads, the horizon is not in level, the one hand is unsharp and the photo is in B&W. BUT all these things is just why this photo is so good and looks like caught out of exactly this moment. You have captured the fine expressions in the faces, and that is the most important in this one. B&W I like more than the color, as it removes disturbing eyecatchers and draws all attention onto the faces and the sweet story told in this lovely portrait. Very good work indeed, I think. Even thoug I have posted you a little workshop showing some more details, hope you like it. Not that is nescessarely better, just a suggestion of something else, I also like the more soft tones in yours very much, maybe even best, I actually don't know. Now, that is something to think about, I hope... Greetings Jens :-)

Hi Thomas,
I myself find kids in the provinces quite a happy bunch although they don't have the electronic gadgets to play. With a lot of imagination, they just use natural local materials for toys and they are happy with it.
Well captured scene and presented. Well done!
Cheers,

Hi Tom,
you are far from being a beginner, I love your photos, this one has really captured my attention, such a nice BW photo. Your composition gives me the impression of a good harmony of lines, all in parallel from the horizon to the tilted head of the boy and to the slight tilt of the frame. Perfect!
Thanks,
