Photographer’s Note

The Moriones festival is a week long religious celebration held during holy week in the island province of Marinduque. One of the Philippines' most colorful festivals, participants, wearing masks and costumes depicting Roman centurions, re-enact the story of St. Longinus, a centurion himself, who is said to have speared Christ's side at the crucifixion. Tradition has it that drops of Christ's blood landed in his blind eye and restored its sight. The miracle converted him and consequently he was beheaded for this.
