[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the third in my series on the Gawad Kalinga build in the Aurora storm area. To put this into context I invite you to look at the previous two shots and read their accompanying notes: (1) Path of a Storm, (2) Bawat Pilipino Bayani.

In this shot you can see victims of the storm on their way to work. Every morning the people (those who have been put on the short list for the first 20 homes, those on the list for the first hundred, and those hoping to be on the next list) walk 30 minutes to an hour from thier makeshift homes (seen in my last photo) to the build site.

The build site is on gorgeous land btw. Set utop a hill overlooking the hills and valleys of the area, and the Pacific Ocean can be seen in the distance.

Enthusiasm is high for some, for others it's just a reminder that they have been without a home for over five months. I'm told that until the first batch of homes are a reality, the people still don't quite believe that they will be given one catch-free.

Construction has been slow, and homes are behind schedule (at least as of the day this was taken), but hope is still there. And those that have been put on the short list are understandably thankful.

Post-pro: convert to BW, levels, curves, sharpening.

Hi Alex!
I like a lot your b&w in the 3 shots. And here all the symbolism of the light behind the kids and the darker guy in the foreground, but all together strong and willing.
A question: could you explain how did you get the wide angle distortion in the two previous?
Great to see you around again,
anton

Good shot :)
despite your writeup, the mood is upbeat.
i like the balanced compo between the man and the kids

Hi Alex,
I wish I had that much enthusiasm every morning to go to work.... well captured.

G'day Alex,

Given the focal length and your distance from the front guy-- this shot really conveys a much wider perspective than I'd expect from a 35mm EFL-- I guess it's the gracious lean to the right that the foreground guy has taken.

I like the soft grey tones throughout and the backlighting-- the sheer darkness of the front guy is a little strong but fill flash definitely would have taken from the ambience.

Well, first of all it's of course the happy face and body language of the guy in fron that sells this image, but you use of backlight and close distance to the main subject makes it a really nice dynamic composition, nice and simple ,-). Then the note comes along and shifts the whole mood, it still looks happy but knowing the background adds depth, both to the image and to the people.

Superb, man! Love the shadows and the cloud behind his head.
What an expression of enthusiasm!
Great documentary.

excellent composition here with that man in the foreground and children far behind, lots of joy in the frame. the light was very nice, harsh but it created a special mood. nice shot Alex

Good result mate;

Especially considering you were shooting into the sun. You can really see the excitement they have about getting their houses in their smiles and body language. Nicely captured mate!
