Photographer’s Note
spotted this unique headress from a girl attending Kalindogan 2006. Kalindogan is a lumad (indigenous people) term meaning - a gathering. more than 200 young people from 30 IP tribes in mindanao met in USEP Mintal on Oct 19-23, 2006 to talk about issues and challenges that they face as a lumad and as a young person.
her headress is unique because it looks like a contemporary convergence of the traditional colors of the higaonon tribe with new materials like pom poms made out of yarn. the traditional headress would mostly comprise of beads and colored feathers. poms are a later input to the cultural exchange of the upland lumads with the migrants from visayas and from luzon.
goes to show the inevitable influence of modern times can either make or break the culture of a people, depending of course on how the young lumad makes use of it.
