Photographer’s Note

On May 1st 1898, "modern" American warships defeated an obsolete spanish fleet protecting Manila Bay during the last year of its colonisation. With this defeat of the spanish armada, the Americans have expanded their global control to the pacific region which also included the island of Cuba in the Carribeans in the Treaty of Paris for $20,000,000 to Spain for Philippines alone.

Before the Battle of Manila Bay began, local rebels have almost paralysed the spaniards' control of most of the provinces of Luzon. General Aguinaldo was then proclaimed as the first president of the country before the outbreak of the Filipino-American War almost a year later on the 4th of February 1899.

Photo:
Large ships stay within the bay for several days undocked and many fishermen approach them take this opportunity to sell their goods to the crew who are not given permission to set foot on land.

The fading slope in the background is Mt Mariveles, in Bataan Province.
