Photographer’s Note

This is my first attempt of using the photomerge feature of Adobe Photoshop Elements. As I look into the stitched image, I see evidence of the process - it does not appear seamless. I did not do additional pp work after stitching except for auto contrast and level adjustments. Later if I remember I will post the original photos later and invite people to do a WS. I'd like to learn how to do this correctly.

I found the photos as I was again digging into my archive last night. Taken almost a year ago, the rainbow appeared prior to a brief shower. We were strolling the low shore of this quaint town which was teeming with corals and other marine life.

A trip to Guiuan takes much doing. The town, located on a narrow peninsula that juts out of Samar like a tail, is approached by land in a round about way, involving a trip to Catbalogan on the west and a mountain crossing to Taft on the east coast, then a long trip south. The shortest land route would be through Basey, but the passage between Basey and Balangiga is nearly impassable. The more convenient trip is to start at Tacloban and take the ferry to Guiuan. The relative isolation of this town has helped preserve much of its heritage. The trip is well rewarded by the sight of a complex much intact, after many years of changing fortunes.

Wow!! Pure magic!! The bright light of a full rainbow against the amazing sky. Any you stitched it too!! I've never gotten results like this. next time I definitely will use a polarizer.

I like most the texture of the water here, light and sharpness are good too... it seems the stitch is visible in top midlle of rainbow?... A good POV and framing

Hi Danilo!
What I found out is, when you plan to do some stitching, polarizer messes rather than helps. It's because you change the angle while shooting, thus the light comes into your lens at a different corner, polarizer adds to that. I'd suggest making the pictures similar in settings BEFORE stitching.

Good experimentation with stitching. Which software did you use? There are a few marks but the oevrall effect sure looks good.

I've with a lot admiration looking to your picture, splendid panoramic image, lovely rainbow, nice composition too. Maybe two small remarks, the sky line tilt a little bit to the left, two, the stitching give a small mistake, maybe not easy for making, generally is this a very well picture. TFS.

Hi Danilo. This photostitch thing aint as easy as it seems. The best success I’ve had is when I have gone totally manual in taking the photos (all at the same settings and focus) and used a tripod in the process. Nice photo all the same, good composition and symmetry. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Danilo. You know I've got Photoshop Elements 5 myself and never had heard of that Photomerge feature so I thank you for mentioning that in your note. This rainbow really reminds me of Landscape Arch in Arches National Park. I’ve never seen a complete rainbow like that. The polarizer must have helped make it stand out even more. Fantastic shot, but the surprisingly stitching is not that perfect...try Autostitch program, a download from the net..that also does a decent job. But that does not take anything away the beauty of the shot & the setting. I like the light/shade effect & the heavenly gate.

it is really worth all the effort stitching this. i haven't seen a rainbow for years. maybe you can use a canon 5D with sigma 12-24 lens next time. it might cover all the rainbow hehe

It's not often we get to see a full rainbow let alone take a photo of it so well done for that. Although you admit yourself the stitch is not perfect the result is not too noticeable. You already have some good advice for next time. The only thing I can add is that you may have to do some cloning or use the healing brush on the joins. Even the smudge tool on low opacity might help.
