Photographer’s Note

Jan. 8, 2006: Bantayan

Shiemiuzel's Family struggles everyday to make ends meet (they fish for a living) living a simple life in a simple one room wood & bamboo home on the sea.

When I stopped by this day, I was chatting with her Mama, when little Shiemiuzel heard my voice and poked her head out the door to the Family home, to see if it was me.
..I love this image of her - she's a beautiful child; it's one of my Favorites from 2006.

All of the 6 children help out with the daily chores of washing clothes & cleaning the house, and preparing food (there's a simple grill outside where they fire up dried coconut wood to cook fish & RICE), along with looking after their younger brothers & sisters....it's a very close & loving Family, and they're all a joy to be around, even though it's a hard life for them.

Along with the food I bring them, I'm going to try to get the kids some newer school clothes in Nov. 2006 - I'm organizing a clothing drive for them, as well as for Lisa & LetLet's Family in Cebu, much the same as I did for Rosa & Edison in Manila in December 2005 (2 poor street children I've known & helped there since 2003)

All of Shiemiuzel's & her Family's clothes are aged hand-me-downs and they can really use some new ones - myself & a few friends who have donated a little money towards this effort are going to see to that, when I return to Philippines in Nov. 2006

SandMan & Shiemiuzel's school age brothers & sisters are all in school, and they come home on their lunch hour to help cook their food, and help their Mother out before heading back to class.

This is definitely a very calling look.
I could not resist in reading your note... Your photography is a real chance for these people to get attention.
The DOF is superb as well as the background color.

Though the portrait on its own wont disclose much, due to the lack of surroundings, but the eyes of this child conveys a lot that she observes and goes thru in a day.

The note you write says it all and accentuates warmth & wishes.

A brilliant treatment on POV,sharpness, skin color, wb has been maintained to keep it as perfect to capture the real thing.

Well composed work of art.

the moment i saw your photo i was touched and
after reading your comment i was amazed
i must admit a lot of filipino are not fortunate enough to support their daily necesities such as food, housing and even clothing but inspite of that the smile on their faces never fade, and you know why because there is always someone there who has a good heart such as yours that make them happy not only for the things you share but for the time and effort that not all filipino can give them. i admire your good heart.
