Photographer’s Note

When I went to Batad, Banaue, Ifugao last month, my main pursuit was to photograph the rice terraces. Little did I know that old folks in Ifugao were also excellent portrait subjects. She was sitting quietly under an Ifugao native house when I approached her. I did not speak a word, I just sat in front of her admiring her aged and beautiful face. I waited for her to get comfortable with my presence, then when I raised my camera to shoot, she didn't mind. I took a few shots, and then said thank you. She smiled back.

Hi Alford,
She certainly is a character and I think has seen many years and experiences. You have a nice tight framing and I like the way she is sitting with her hand on her head. Good detail on her facial features.

Alford- its a very powerful portrait. Inevitable lines of age and that mundane 'look'. I can feel what you've written- I once wanted to click an old man, hesitantly I approached and dipped in 'how-to-say' problem, when I finally asked him- he obliged with a smile and a similar look. Somehow, age teaches you to be at peace with urself.

Thanks for the pic, and for the story- I loved it even more.

Hi Alford,

This is a powerful portrait that has a lot of dignity in it. You can tell that she feels OK with you taking pictures. For me that is very important. I also like the positioning of her arm. Wonderful stuff!
