Photographer’s Note
A scene from Peshawar, a fascinating city close to the border with Afghanistan. Women in burqas are very common there, not like in the rest of Pakistan. a very interesting city, a pity that kids are so nasty there and don't give a single foreign traveller any minute of peace.. I run away from there after two days ;)
Luko told me several times it is a good photo, let's see ;)

Peshawar is indeed a fascinating city, and you've got the essence of it here. The proximity of Afghanistan can be felt throughout the city, and that shows on your photo. With the burqa covering the woman's entire face, you have made this "portrait" more interesting by setting it against a backdrop of the typically Pakistani, colorful bus. Very well composed, wonderful photo, which reminds me of the fascinating place which Peshawar certainly is.

It's an outstanding photo, just not a 'good photo'. Looks like the lady in burqa bought her hand bag from the same person who was in charge of the "exterior decoration" of the bus, and boy, some bus that is. The light and the the frozen moment are both fantastic. I haven't seen too many grey before in India. Is that pretty common in peshwar as oppsed to black burqas?

Hi Maciej ,
Wonderful pre visulization. The well decoreted Lorry, the veiled woman and the candidness all give life in it.
Regards.

I think Luko was right - it's a great photo. You've got the riot of color on the bus making up most of your background, but a tiny bit of grey peeking out of the corner for a bit of alternative reality. But of course, the woman in the burka really places a swath of conservatism right in the middle of all this color. Best is that even covered, you can see which way she's looking - at the girl who is part of the exotic colors but beginning to become entangled in the dark, somber colors herself. An interesting back and forth between two tendancies, found in one spot.

You shouldn't have mentioned Luko's name... Some will not dare to contradict the master and some will take the opportunity to discard your photo just because of it. :) To me, it's brilliant, mainly because the dialog between that covered twisted head and the uncovered (although not for long) little girl's expression. There is drama and tension all around the picture and this feeling is broke somehow by the multicolored background provided by the ornamented bus. Great light. I love it. But I am no Luko... ;)

It's a damn good photo, Maciej, a mature shot. Love the crazy Pakistani
bus as a backround and the shocking contrast between a modest veil and the "full burka" so to speak. More than an "art" shot this is a first class documentary shot.
Best,
Francis (Still shooting postcards...)

So many bright colours in the bus, I enjoy it. It seems like a very interesting place, and your photo is very sharp. With your focus of the woman in the burqa, I like it.
Regards
P.S. From the tally of comments, I would say it's a good photo.

hello Maciej,
Yes it is a good photo !!! I like "the burqa-eyecontact" with the woman, didn't she got angry because you took a photo of her ? Or don't they mind in Peshawar ??? A beautiful colourpalet in the background . I like the compo with the girl on the right side and the woman next to her, "like the future of this little girl in some years" ...

I was reluctant to come in (as anywhere I'm expected to) and was also waiting for the others advice, but I like I told you on two other sites at least, I like it very much, one of my favorites in your photo collection because this is what travel means to me.
Completely travel, that unexpected but pleasant hit that strikes your chin when you're totally disorientated... something totally exotic happening in front of you, other cultures, other tastes, other feelings, other behaviors, other language, other meanings.
Like for instance the bus paint, who'd decorate a bus this way here? It looks like somebody had been eating a complete box of various paint tubes and while his bus journey had been severely sick... until a sudden need to relieve his sickness by the wndow.
Also there's the Afghan/pakistani burqa, like one members noticed, we're not far from afghan border, let apart (or maybe BECAUSE of) the ethics and human freedom matters, I cannot figure out something more exotic, ie. opposite to our common beliefs and way of life. I've been to Afghanistan, even now this country remains a mystery to me, I loved the people and the experience, though I can't figure any single second of sharing a similar life to afghan people. I could be a Lao monk, I could get drunk everyday with the Ibans in Borneo, weight 200 lbs eating burgers everyday in NYC, sleep with my pig in a remote village in Vanuatu but I can't see myself like an Afghani guy. I believe everyone finds an antipode, mine is Afghanistan.

Hi Maciej,
Very beautiful 'daily life'-picture of Peshawar. I like the contrast between the grey burqua and the multi coloured bus.
Greetings, Paul
