Photographer’s Note

Three miles east of Lahore, on the Grand Trunk Road, are the famous Shalimar Gardens. Shalimar Gardens in Lahore were constructed at the command of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1628-1658). Covering 80 acres, it was laid out on the plan of a garden in Srinagar (Kashmir), primarily to provide accommodation when the emperor was on tour in Lahore, and as a place of recreation for the royal family. The gardens were completed in 1642 and measure 658 meters north to south and 258 meters east to west.

Seen here is the central tank with the marble platform in the middle along with pathways used to access it. Also seen in the distance are the great marble cascade, the Aiwan (grand hall), and the pavillion built by Ranjit Singh.
