Back to Pakistan for this shot and probably a few more as I've now got round to sorting out my photos properly. There will be more from Afghanistan later.

I saw this old guy on the streets of Peshawar and was fascinated by his beard. I had to have a photo. But when I looked at him it was clear he wasn't going to let me get close up. The best I could do was to "shoot from the hip" from where I was. The original shows a much wider scene in the street - but with some severe cropping I get a pleasing portrait. I will post the original to a workshop so you can see what I mean. As I cropped a lot, I had to post this image a little smaller than usual to retain sharpness.

A very nice capture Jonathan - his expression, the lighty and his clothing work together to really say something about him and his character.

best wishes Kev

Hi Jonathan,
The contrast between white beard and darkish cloaths & thick black framing makes this face stand out - another point of interest is unusual appearance of the man's mouth being open as if in awe or great surprise...
You did a good job cropping this out from the original scene,
Robi

Great shot.I like the composition and point of view.I like the expression of the man.Good colors, light, textures and sharpness.Very good job!

Hello Jonathan,
I'm not a great lover of portrait photography - probably because I'm so bad at it myself - but this one really grabbed my attention. I can hardly believe that you shot this "from the hip" - perhaps you have discovered the secret of great portraiture - he is not actually looking down the barrel of a camera! Anyway, it's a lovely shot, and the light coming in over his hat really sets it off - not to mention the beard.
Regards
Colin

Very nice, Jonathan, expression, quality, the way you crop and framed.
Colors by nikon, a marvel

What a great portrait, Jonathan ! Thanks for sharing the way how you got it, it is really interesting and I am looking forward to seeing the original. Prefect composition. Like an old masters painting. Congratullations. Cheers, Michael

Hi Jonathan,
A lovely portrait where you used the light very well, there are many children portraits on TE, but I find these portraits of old wise people far more impressive, excellent !
Have a nice sunday,
Jean-Yves

Merveilleux portrait.Le personnage a beaucoup de charisme sans même le connaître.Génial.Phil

great portrait. I like the fabric and arm framing, very natural. too bad that his eyes aren't sharper.

Wow Jonathan! Where did you pull this shot out of? My first impression was that it looks like it could have come right out of National Geographic. Wonderful look to this man, with the beard and the clothing, and from your story you did a brilliant job of capturing it. Superb!

Even shooting "from the hip" (let me know how you do that with the D70 :-), this turned out splendid, Jonathan. I like how he is not frontally facing the lens, and how the details of his face - not least of his fascinating beard - are rendered here. Nice tones and the tight cropping works quite well, too. Good job.

Very nice portrait.
You catched an expression really fascinating.
Thanks for sharing

I bet you wanted to do a full session with him because it is one of those faces that cry out to be photographed,we do however have to treat our subjects with respect.I am sure were he to see it that the gentleman would be delighted because the expression and pose are spot on.Despite all the cropping the quality at web resolution is still excellent.

Hai Jonathan, I like this close crop of the old man. It brings out the feature of the man more as compared to the one in the workshop.

Wow, Jonathan, An impressive portrait. It looks like a classical oil painting portrait. Good to have the frame to this picture. Well use of the light and excellent clarity. Well done.

HI Jonathon great notes explaining how you took this fine image, wonderful skin tones and very pleasing colours.
Well done and TFS.
Dave.

His expression is fascinating. It looks like he's up to something clever. The glow in his eyes in wonderful. I looked at the original and the post-processing is very well done.

Jonathan,
The detail and character of his face are quite intriguing and well shown in this photograph. I like his quizzical expression and the multiple hues of his eyes. This is a wonderful portrait.

yes, the cropping makes the picutre a bit too focused on the face. but it's a great portrait! what do you mean by "shoot from the hip"? exactly?

grat pic and note! and thanks for the workshop...

Wow! You've found Osama Bin Laden! (it's a joke!). Impressive portrait, full of details and skin textures. Regards.

Hola Jonathan
Muy buena toma si señor. La expresion de la cara es genial con su larga barba. Excelente nitidez.

Helo Jonathan,

I like the way you framed tightly the face and turban of this man. The thick frame also gives us the impression that we look through a window: A picture I would have like to be taken.

This image just blows me away. It is a very rivetting shot. But then when one looks at the original and realizes how the original was rather interesting but not remarkable and how you were able to see and emphasize this wonderful face, well.... You have a marvelous eye and I commend you.
Jackie

What an amazing portrait. His look holds so much emotion and age. You managed to keep the picture very sharp and the smaller size really doesn't matter at all. Fantastic job.
Chris

Very nice...great tone, great content, very well done.

Hi Jonathan, this portrait is really great, reminds me some from Steve McCurry. The PP is also really well made.
Only a bit soft on the eyes, but it's hard to get more with an hip shot.

hi jonathan
i think the shot is very good i also see ben laden in the mans face a very old ben laden at that but you could not have asked for better with the shot

Hi Jonathan,
I like most the look of the man.Very nice capture.TFS.Seda

I think this is one of those occasions where the man's fear of tourist-with-camera shows on his face, and that expression makes his image so endearing to us.

Exelent portrait, I like the frame too, the only thing I add is the end of hi beard.

Congratulations you made a nice work and both ws are amazing

Hello, Jonathan -

This is an incredible portrait, the more so for being a hip shot. The clarity and the expression are amazing.
