Another oldie. This one is from Quetta in Pakistan in 1973.
As I was going out from my rather basic hotel one day I met a little girl on the staircase and asked to take her picture. Since she didn't say no (she didn't understand a word, of course) I snapped one photo. A second later a dark, strong voice said from further up: Excuse me, MISTER. I thought her father was outraged and might demand I take out the film, but when I walked back to him, he just stood there at the top of the stairs, carrying a little baby boy, and said: You take my son too.
He didn't ask me to send a copy of the photo, so why he was so anxious I don't know. I can only guess that he considered his son far more important than his daughter.
Behind him in this picture you can see two women, maybe his wife and an elder daughter, curiously looking out of their room to see what was going on.
If you want to see what the little daughter looked like, you will find her in the workshop.
By the way, the important little boy will be 40 years old any day now.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Hello Gert. The title says it all. The serious faces of father and son are impressive. Although the son has a pacifier in his mouth, he looks somehow a bit grown up. The background story I really like. Overall, an interesting photo, - not to mention the two people left behind in the picture.

Yes both seem serious about their importnacem both father and son. Nice light here and good dof. Interesting story too. However, I prefer the workshop photo of his daughter. I like the almost unposed effect and the appealing graphic quality of it.

Children, and old men from two different generations, beginning of life, the last stage of life (child, teen, young, middle age, old)
Baby pacifier, white beard man
Congratulations for the good work
Have a good night, and good luck

Lovely story, I really enjoy reading it and this is the first time I'm in time to see the workshop photo. The photo was excellently taken, despite the back light, you managed well, excellent colour, detail and tone..wonderful eye contact. Yes, a proud man with his important son. I like the workshop one as well... why not put on tomorrow? Otherwise,it would be hard to find again as I find many times..imagine,if someone sees this photo a year later...
bayno (18344) 2012-11-26 7:44
definitely males are more important in a family, the females have to pay the dowry, you know that in recent years have allowed to ask the ultrasound in pregnant women in India because there were too many cases of abortion when it was a fetus of a little girl...
always nice and interesting pic...luchy to be in that land....now no possible anymore...

A wonderful pair of photographs - the workshop picture of a rather startled little girl at a window and this, a proud but somewhat severe looking gentleman and his baby son. And all the more wondrous that this little boy must now be approaching 40 years of age!
The pink "dummy" on a string looks a bit incongrous these days as I think they're rather frowned upon in Western countries now. But that piercing look which the man is giving you - I am not at all surprised that you thought he might have wished to destroy your film, if not bury your camera in your skull! And the two curious womenfolk peering round the edge of the picture - fabulous!
A wonderful duo of pictures to have - and what a shame thse people couldn't now see them too. And, considering that they were scanned from nearly 40 year old colour slides, they are of excellent quality.

This is a good portrait of the father and son, so it's interesting and impressive to see the father with the sufficient physique which was wearing the beard and the hat and the lovely child who has held the cap in his mouth. It's impressive in their traditional clothes. And, it is interesting that two girls are looking into the situation at a left window, too. Among many countries of Asia, it may be the sense of values in race society as one which the boy finds useful rather than the girl. Well captured, good focus and excellent tone.

you made a great portrait of father and son and a great picture of the whole family with mother and daughter having a glimpse from the distance. The father, who asked for the picture, has fully cooperated and shown what he wanted to show, the way he sees himself and his son. He is such a proud and confident man. It's stunning to watch the baby's serious expression as if he were already aware of his status. I love the side light and the colours and the baby's hand on his father's shoulder. A very straightforward portrait. I also like the picture of the little girl in the workshop. It has remarkable spontaneity and intensity, it's wonderful. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

You can see the pride here in the man's face, behind some of the stubbornness and gruffness! Wonderful story which adds a lot to the understanding of this shot's rich layers. The workshop of the young girl is beautiful as well - I can see why she caught your attention first!

I read your note with great interest and I agree that the look on the father's face does indeed suggest that he regards his son as the more important one to photograph! I often wonder when looking at old pictures what the people in them are doing now. This boy should now be just 1 year older than my son - there is no knowing how different their lives might be. I think the portrait of the girl is lovely.
Another very interesting step back in time - TFS.

Hi Gert, Very interesting story. I like the photo of the sweet girl but this one is really impressive. The man looks so proud of his little son. Maybe he had waited for him for a long time and had only daughters? He looks rather as a grandfather than a father. Interesting photo.

amazing documental photos here and nice portraits in one. Pity that here and in WS faces are without smiles. They have, supposedly, hard life. Good scan from Your archive. Photos I like.
Have a nice day.

wenn man den Gesichtsausdruck des Vaters sieht, würde man nie auf den Gedanken kommen, dass er freiwillig fotografiert werden wollte! Das Foto allein ist gut, aber mit deiner Geschichte dazu wird es wertvoll.
abmdsudi (45706) 2012-11-27 7:29
I applaud the images quality in particular the workshop photo, shooting by the window under strong light is a real challenge. I love her powerful eye contact and the catchlight. An interesting picture story too, that grumpy man is a real characterful, serious, demanding and seems not a happy man, anyway both father and son make fine models for this fam portraiture and the glimpse of peep in the background is real bonus. Another appealing old picture and nice pp treatment. Congrats.

Really excellent scan with a timeless quality to it. The man is so serious, and clearly his wife and daughters remained in the background, while he and his baby boy took center stage. I can only imagine what the daily life of this family was like, and what happened to the children. Very nice colors and bokeh, with an excellent workshop photo, too.
marabu61 (9239) 2012-11-28 7:24
Great story to this picture, it shows the importance of a male heir in many parts of the world.
They both look so serious and the two women in the background complete your story so nicely.
