This is Torkham, the border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan on the main road from Peshawar to Jalalabad and Kabul. Torkham is right on top of the legendary Khyber pass, through which foreign invaders have reached the Indian subcontinent a number of times.
This picture from early May 1973 was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

What a place - and what a colourful truck, obviously loaded "up to the roof"! A real drudgery for the customs officers ... ;-) An interesting picture!
Greetings from rainy and cold Germany - and a Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Hello Gert ,
A very intersting shot.
When I see your reportages I feel embarrassed: I have photos of every day, yours are important documents.

Apart from the narcotics, guns smuggled cars....nothing to declare :)
This is a very well suited composotion for this landscape. The truck against the magnificent rock face. These bedfords have been scaling this moumtain range for decades and dont show any signs of decay. I like how you have left some sky up the top to give an idea of the height of the cliff.
thanks for sharing

Another fascinating old shot from the days before we even knew what computers were or could be. Pretty good scan of this old slide. How times have changed in this area since then! I like the composition showing that steep rockface behind the truck. Fantastic timeless photo. You did well to remember where it was, but perhaps you kept a diary. Well done.

Thank you for posting this border crossing. Your scan shows much detail of the elaborate truck, the full load and the rockface - the journey there I will try and imagine.
Unfortunately we never went through the Khyber Pass. We were in Tehran on our New Years Eve 18months after you passed this way - and at that time of the year, in the middle of winter, it did not seem a good idea to venture into Afghanistan. Instead we went south directly into Pakistan.
Thanks for sharing, Marlene

Another interesting old picture, wonder what this place looks like today ;) Was this the kind of truck you were travelling with?

exotic as it may be (at least for me), this is an excellent documentary shot! Quite an interesting, curious truck (there are even some pictuers on it!) - and especially the perspective right behind it, the BG... with the mountains and very blue sky above!

I continue to travel on your archives. Simple shot, but I can image that report from so difficult region. I see the amazing domestic pictures on the truck. I saw this fashion in India too. Thanks for sharing.
