This is from the city of Quetta in Pakistan in 1973. Maybe this man could be said to be ahead of his time. He lost a leg long before the Pakistani border areas were overwhelmed by Afghans who lost legs or arms in the war, and he was forced to go begging for his survival long before the global financial crisis.
Scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

There are several aspects of this photo. The first is of course the man who, as you say, is ahead of time. A very strong picture of him in every way. The second aspect is the excellent exposure. Conditions seem to have been quite difficult with that sunshine the man is standing in and the shadowed part behind him. This is a very good picture!

very good photo! You have an ability to see the "right" people at the "right" place!
What is interesting for me here is: the two main colours (the man's clothes and the general tint of the surroundings), and the man's posture.
Concerning the subject of the photo... I think we must be very grateful that we have two arms, two hands, two legs... and we are able to walk, work... and enjoy a simple life which we often tend to unnecessarily complicate.

apart from the content of the image, i'm astonished by the quality of this scan... it's better than many of the digital photos that we see every day...
best wishes, jerzy

this a heartbreaking scene. Excellent scan and well worth see, to reminded us how fortunate we are and to realized there is a world in need of helping hands as well somewhere. Such a documentary of a difficult life.

Yes, many lost their hands and legs but when these people threw away the red star across the borders then they were declared terrorist cause they feared that their training could turn to their own selves...

I like your title Gert, your mood and your poignant image. I promise I will not moan today.

A fine documentary photo with a good note. Yes it seems that the man is ahead of his time not just with loosing his leg but also with his prosthetic leg.
Thanks for sharing

This seems to a documentary photograph, so it shows one miserable situation brought about by war and dispute. He was forced to go begging for his survival against his will as you note in here. The same dispute has occurred in every corner of the earth even now which passed for 40 years from this photograph. It seems that the psychology of the human being who causes dispute does not change even if technology progresses. It's impressive in his traditional clothes and wooden wall of backdrop. Well composed and excellent tone/clarity.

Heartbreaking... Poverty and misery are the widely-accepted standard of human condition in so many places. It's important that we show that fact in our photos, not only attractive sights and smiling locals.

As a contrarian sentence to what you had written on my photo - this is not the "ordinary" person to encounter on a town while visiting. Yet, it conveys a lot of sadness, as to the hardship he might obviously have.
With the surrounding's, you show an extraordinary photo of daily-life from long ago.
My best regards, and good evening,
