Photographer’s Note
The first photograph from North Korea that I posted a few weeks ago was of Kwangbok (Liberation) Street in a relatively affluent area of Pyongyang to the west of the city centre. Today I am posting a picture of the older residential areas to the east of the Taedong River which runs through the centre of Pyongyang. This photograph was taken from the top of the Tower of the Juche Idea.
You may notice that in the tree lined street in the top left, there are lots of people walking on the sidewalks, but very few motor vehicles. This is very typical of Pyongyang.
Although this area looks quite old, most of it would have been built since the Korean War. Pyongyang was razed to the ground in 1952 in much the same way as Hiroshima and Dresden were in WWII. Many people that I met in Pyongyang still talk with considerable bitterness about the bombing, even though most of them weren’t alive in 1952. It seems that the stories are passed down from one generation to another, and even today it is talked about as if it was quite a recent event. I sensed that the stories of the bombing of Pyongyang play a large part in the animosity that North Koreans have towards the US.
I found the following report on the bombing of Pyongyang on the Federation of American Scientists website:
+++++++++
“On 11 July 1952 the Air Force launched a concentrated strike on Pyongyang under the name Operation Pressure Pump. The war's largest air raid came on 29 August 1952, when FEAF and carrier planes bombed Pyongyang in a 1,403-sortie assault.
During the war, FEAF units flew 720,980 sorties and delivered 476,000 tons of ordnance. For these numbers FEAF estimated it had killed nearly 150,000 North Korean and Chinese troops and claimed the destruction of more than 975 aircraft, 800 bridges, 1,100 tanks, 800 locomotives, 9,000 railroad cars, 70,000 motor vehicles, and 80,000 buildings.
The Korean People's Army (KPA) losses in the Korean War, called the Fatherland Liberation War by North Korea, totaled more than half a million persons, although North Korea has not released figures. The war also resulted in the virtual destruction of North Korea's economy and infrastructure.”
++++++++++
Not all of Pyongyong is quite as depressing looking as this, and tomorrow I will post a photograph taken looking west from the Tower of the Juche Idea which shows more of the public buildings in the city centre.
There is nothing special from technical perspective about this photograph. I just wanted to post it to give you an idea of what Pyongyang looks like.
Usual PP: cropped, adjusted levels, contrast, saturation and USM.

Hi David,
Another interesting overlooking view, this side looks quite different from your previous view with the wide avenue, possibly an older district judging from the three foreground aged towers and the low houses at the bottom. It's grey but clear and we can well see plenty of interesting details including this blue roof building that shines so well it seems to have been cloned there. Nice one !
Have a nice day,

Hi David,
A depressing looking, indeed, but a very good point of view. The composition is very nice as well as the sharpness and contrasts. You managed very well the light. Usually it gets misty in this kind of shots.
TFS,

Aaah, the "real" North Korea. And this is the city that's much wealthier than most others there! Looks like those foreground buildings are caked with a lot of factory soot. What makes the non-concrete parts of those buildings vary so much in tone--are a lot of windows missing? Anyway, this is very worthwhile documentary--not highly artistic, of course, but I know that's not your purpose here. Thanks for another revealing shot. Regards, Ken.

David,
I really like this the high rises against the single story and the delapadated (sp?)feel to the place. Great muted colours and a nice insight into a very unknown place.
Im really enjoying your posts on NK

A good angle David to see this part of the town with a gradiant mist to the horizont, an excellent sharp and well colored image giving us the right feeling.

Hi David, I like the POV of this photo. Clear to see all the places in the photo.
I have a question for you.
Of all the photos about North Korea in TE here, how many photos were taken at your own free will without any guide taking you around ?

I spent a couple of years in South Korea in the mid 70's David! All I could do was peer across the wide expanse of demilitarized zone to get a glimpse of the North. I really enjoyed the korean people and my time there.
This is a real treat to be able to view your pictures of the North!
Thank you!
Dave

Hi David!
This is a well-taken shot of that happy socialist country.
Most impressive are that three scuffed huge buildings at right.
