My friend's sons and I were on a bus trip. This monk sat cross legged staring out the window the entire trip. Her sons have an excellent eye for photos, I had let them use my cheap camera before. (It died however) The whole trip, Bishwas and I were itching to take the monks picture. The monk looked so stern, I was afraid he would be mad. Whole trip of over an hour, my friend's 14 year old son, kept saying, if I wouldn't take it, let him. Bus stopped, end of trip. As the monk got ready to leave, I finally asked him, he said sure, and here he is ready to leave... (Like the fish that got away for all fishermen, we missed the photo we really wanted).

It takes quite some courage to make photographs of people who you do not know at all or barely meet for a moment. Therefore I admire you for asking the monk for permission but moreover that you also respected people's feelings regarding being included in a picture. Good that you finally asked the monk otherwise it might have given you the feeling of a passed opportunity that you could only have blamed yourself for...

From ethics to technics... A fill-in flash would have helped you out here :)

nice story and good idea but the light from window is too bright.

Nice story and nice shot, after working up the courage to ask his permission, you probably wouldn't have had the nerve to ask him to move to a better position as well! maybe another time though.

great shot, pity it's a bit dark. Learn from it.. "he who hesitates, is lost".. so next time just ask!!
