Photographer’s Note
taken in Katmandu, 22nd of January 2008. in January, a hike in oil prices was withdrawn after fierce protests brought the mainly mountainous nation to a standstill for two days..
Nepal imports about 800,000 tonnes of oil from India and owes millions of dollars to the state-run Indian Oil Corporation, the sole supplier of fuel..the issue of fuel prices is politically sensitive in Nepal, one of the world's poorest countries.
lets see what happens now after the Maoists took over the parliament in April. its no more "Kingdom of Nepal" now, but its a "Federal Democratic Republic" (!?) after the elections.. i am off to Katmandu for a week. cheers all.

Very very well done. the journalistic side of the shot is really strong. The newspaper makes the shot.

Merhaba Evren, I'm really surprised by the lack of success of this photo, I find it very smart, well composed and in the same time informative and interesting. If the crowd had been less static, it would have been even more exciting but all the same, I love it as it is...
Yes, a "news photo" instead of the eternal so-called saddhus (too elegant to be true ones) who are often there just to earn good money with tourist ; much more interesting this one, tebrikler !
With admiration,
Cath.

Great photo. Really journalistic one - if I was a press redactor I'd be happy to have it at the nearest issue.
So far from the problems of Nepal feel moved and maybe don't understand well meaning of the scene, but for sure feel emotions and importance of the moment...

It's so intelligent to show the news papers, now the picture speak by itself. We can feel the tension, the picture doesen't look static. Great great capture.
