A short series of pictures taken in the Nepalese town of Bhaktapur on an early spring holiday to India and Nepal in 2004.

The following information is taken from Wikipedea:

Bhaktapur, also Bhadgaon or Khwopa is an ancient Newar town in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is located in Bhaktapur District and has approx. 78,000 inhabitants. The male inhabitants of this city wear a special type of cap called the Bhaad-gaaule topi. The city is famous for its yoghurt or curd ju-ju Dhau - king of curd.

Bhaktapur's main square, Durbar Square, houses the 55-window Palace which was constructed by King Bhupatindra Malla and was home to royalty until 1769. It is now a National Gallery. Close by is the Golden Gate which leads into Mulchok Court which is home to the Taleju Temple. This temple, like others in the main towns of the Kathmandu Valley, is dedicated to the goddess Taleju Bhawani and includes shrines to the both Taleju Bhawani and Kumari. Entrance to the temple is restricted to Hindus and the living goddess strictly cannot be photographed.

From time immemorial it lay on the trade route between Tibet/China and India. This position on the main caravan route made the town rich and prosperous: each autumn the traders from Tibet came with sheep ("changra"), fitting nicely with the main Hindu holidays, 'Mohni' (Parbatiya: Dasain; Hindi: Dussehra), when nearly everyone in Nepal sacrificed male animals to the goddess Durga. On the return trek the traders brought back to Tibet grains, sugar or Buddhist scriptures.

This prosperity fuelled the cultural life: the temple builders developed a Pagoda-style, spreading it through Tibet all the way to Japan. Finest of all is the five-tiered, heaven piercing Nyatapole.

Bhaktapur is a popular day-trip destination for tourists visiting Kathmandu. Lately, with more air-pollution in Kathmandu, more and more tourists are staying in Bhaktapur for a few days, before arrangements for trekking are finished. For foreign tourists the entry fee is NPR 750/$10; for nationals of SAARC-countries and China the fee is NPR 50.

Hi Stephen,
I'm glad you ended your serie in Oradour, I think your photos were good and that it's essential to remember but I felt very uneasy on commenting and rating them...
Very nice view on this pottery shop. Some of the potteries have amazing details on them, such a beautiful handwork ! The receiver dish on top left corner is a funny constrasting detail :)

Hello Stephen

I remember "Potter's Square" in Bhaktapur, from my visit there in 2002. A superb daily life scene, with good sharpness & colour. Congratulations!

Hallo Stephen!
I like the many many details one can see here, especially this wonderful wooden facade. I also like that you included a bit of the street life. The satellite dish in the background is a wonderful detail.
Greetings from Germany!

Bonjour Stephen,

Hello Stephen,
pottery is nothing of my high personal interest but the POV you chose let the pottery create a lot of patterns and the wooden construction of the shop's front is also nice.

Hi Stephen,
A photo that features an interesting selling method, obstruating the street that way certainly forces potential customers to slow down but also runs the risk of having stuff destroyed by those who don't ! Well exposed shot that keeps the hard light under control.
Have a nice day JY

Hello Stephen.
Great Shot, with good details, like the feelig of quiteness about this shot.
Time seems to stand still, apart from the satelite dish on the roof.
ice One.
Regards.
Mike

Hi Stephen,
Lovely capture of this exotic outdoor shopping district.
The merchants wears are seen in generous light that brings out their lovely eastern details.
The lone man in the dark doorway adds a bit of mystery to this unique image.

Regards, Tom

Bonjour Stephen,
Une composition agrable (sur laquelle tu aurais tout de même du clôner l'antenne parabolique) dans une belle lumière qui fait bien ressortir couleurs et détails de cette profonde perspective.
A bientôt sur TE pour de nouvelles aventures.
Gérard
