The people we met while trekking in the Annapurna area of Nepal were wonderful - soft-spoken, determined, resilient and very kind. One morning in the village of Ghandruk, we rose before dawn, as most visitors do, to see the sun rise against the Himalaya. Though this in itself is an unmatched wonder, we were also touched when we met an elderly woman who was carrying her grandchild along a laneway. After a conversation that consisted entirely of sign language on all our parts, she allowed me to take this photo.
