A group of Asian river buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) grazing in a canal of the Prithvi highway connecting Kathmandu and Pokhara. Water buffaloes were domesticated in India some 5000 years ago, and in China 4000 years ago. In culture, according to Hindu lore, the god of death Yama, rides on a male water buffalo. They should not be confused with the wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee), an endangered species, more aggressive with largest horns, the biggest males individuals can weight up to 1 tonne. The women and little girls generally look after the milking buffaloes while the men and young boys are concerned with the working animals. Throughout Asia, they are commonly tended by children. Water buffaloes are the ideal animals for work in the deep mud of paddy fields, they are used as pack animals, they give dairy products, skin for motorcycle helmets and shoes, meat, bones and horns for jewellery and musical instruments. Their dung is used as a fertilizer, and as a fuel when dried. Source : wiki modified

Very interesting picture of this daily life from Pokhara. I like your note too. It is good for they are domestic buffaloes and pacific animals among the people there.

Interesting and informative note. So, these water buffaloes are not for people drink their milk, or eat their meat. They are hard labors. Haha...
Have a nice afternoon.

Magnifique photo de la vie quotidienne accompagnée d'une intéressante note. Une photo bien composée et bonne gestion de l'éclairage entre ombre et lumière. J'aime bien la disposition des animaux.
Toutes mes amitiés et bonne journée,

A superb daily life scene from Nepal. Perhaps a little more sharpness but adequate as is. Good contrasts between the reflected blue skylight in the stream and the yellow green grass. The cattle are evenly spaced across the screen in a nice arc pattern. Tfs!

Strange to see these animals grazing at the side of the road. Domesticated or not I would still be wary of them. Just don't trust an animal with horns. Love the way the corrugated tin roof is kept in position with big boulders . Good capture with nice colour saturation and clarity.

This, for a westerner, is a very unusual, daily life scene. I bet you found it really interesting!
Your notes themselves are most interesting, highlighting the complete sufficiency of the peoples who herd these animals.
What strikes me most about your shot is the sense of harmony between man and beast. The animals are contentedly grazing or cooling their feet, whilst in the b/g people are equally contented; they are obviously at peace with one another.
Nice guide lines and control of the strong light.
A little use of 'unsharp mask' would just bring out the details in a crisper way.
My warm regards,

Interesting view of buffaloes we Americans do not have.
And your note details their 'multi-purpose' usage, perhaps why they are sacred and their flesh is not eaten?

An unusual photo from you. It may be considered as a 'street' photo in this part of the world where co-existence of domestic animals and people is often seen like this. You have observed that and captured it excellently by including the relaxing people in background.
Very good details and natural colours with a well-researched note.
A very good presentation.

At least one buffaloe was looking directly at the camera, Miguel, the second from left...
Nicely spotted and including two men waiting(bus station?), this gave a daily-life scale to the iage.
Have a nice Friday,

This image makes me smile :) Normally, I picture these buffalo as being very organized, well behaved and orderly, but here I can see they can act just like the cows I am more familiar with. The one on furthest left in particular stands out, being nosey and sticking his head over the fence. Great to see these beasts in a natural relaxed pose like this!
All the best

Were you a bit nervous, so the sharpness is not so good?
Anyway this kind of captures are from far my preferred ones
Watching and reading your notes helps me to know more about this incredible country

Buffalo, aggressive and dangerous animal, this animal I have a bad memory, on the coast of the Caspian Sea buffalo attacked me and I had to shoot it with a gun, Milk is full of fat
jmdias (48391) 2013-10-13 12:45
they looks like the ones we have here in some pastures near the big rivers, anyway people don't like their meet so much, but the milk is used for mozzarella producers. nice image showing the people not so far from them.
