Photographer's Note

A while ago I presented you with the view of the first Gokyo lake in the Gokyo valley.

On the trail from Machhermo to Gokyo we passed the first three lakes of the Gokyo valley. This one, the third, is very quite large. It lies in the altitude 4800 metres above sea level and is called Dudh Pokhari. The Gokyo village actually lies on the shore of this lake.

All the lakes have amazing turquoise colour. These lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system comprising six main lakes, but there are more of them in total. The Gokyo lake system is spread over an area of 196.2 ha lying between 4,600 and 5,100 m. The wetland lies on the head of the Dudh Kosi river, which descends from Cho Oyu.

The Gokyo Lakes are considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists.
