This is the technique - shooting from the hip - that I like to employ in street photography at times when the opportunity permits. Shooting upwards without looking through the viewfinder and preventing eye contact as far as possible, allows me to take much more candid images of people on the move as they do not realise me shooting them and with the wide lens I get much more interesting perspective allowing viewers to feel as if they are part of the whole scene.
This is a picture of Tibetan pilgrims at Boudhanath Stupa walking clockwise round the stupa, lens prefocused and polarised, camera preset on manual mode using fast shutter speed with a tiny hot shoe attached spirit level to get the camera square and horizontal.
This is the most decent image I have got from the pick-and-choose at the same spot out of 20 images.

its all about the eyes!!
what a set of eyes this lady has, as she looks to her left with a serious gaze.
excellent photo taken from the hip.
love the city views and activity in contrast on the right.

Wonderful colours. Vivid and Expressive. The piety of the pilgrims are very well expressed. The slight blurr of the background heightens and intensifies the viewers focus on the two pilgrims, and also retaining the bright colour of the buildings in the background. The white of the Boudhanath Stupa has sharpness and clarity.
The blue sky with feathery white clouds across the background is facinating.

Interesting note about your technique of shooting quick photos, the atmosphere of the street, I think it requires a lot of practice, in this case you get a quite natural, with pilgrims in close-up and the prospect of the street in this low level .
An authentic and natural, with good perspective and very natural colors, excellent brightness.
Have a nice day.

excellent usage of wide-angle lens to capture a portrait. You had superb technique to immortalize such scenes.Thank, that you shared it with us.The result is really stunning. We really get impression as if we were a part of the scene and were among these people there.Brilliant work and thank you for revealing the secret of your technique. Will have to try it out.

I like how the glance of the pilgrim is like a still center, perfectly in the middle of the motion, and also how the white of her eyes shines out.

I remember you using this technique in other crowds and the result is stunning. It really makes me feel like a fly on the wall, observing while not being observed. Now you managed to capture the old woman looking in your direction, or just about, but we can see that her mind is somewhere else, not at all with you - or us. The partly cut-off persons on the fringes of the photo enhances this feeling I get of stepping right into life as it is happening. The technical quality is astonishing, considering the circumstances.

Hi Abmdsudi, nice work. I like the inclusion of the traditional archtitecture, and stupa, gives great context to the women. Perhaps just a little dark? cheers, Steve

In fact, no one seems to have noticed you, good technique, I have sometimes used but rarely the focus is perfect, you captured perfectly the expression of the old lady in her rituals, very nice light and colors, excellent quality , perfect exposure for this scene of life...love it...

Shooting from the hip, such an appropriate expression for this unique form of photgraphy, and the results as you show here are wonderful. The womans eyes are really the focus of this image, as they are so real and filled with expression. As you say, I feel like I am actually part of this place with your shot, there is no fakery for the camera, and that is a wonderful thing. Great shot and idea, and one I would love to try myself someday soon.
Out of interest though, does the sound of the camera shutter not alert people to the fact that you are shooting?
all the best

Hi, me again abmdsudi
I could not miss this one either
A great sky for this hip shot where you've been quite successful both with the focus and the frame, including the tibetan pilgrims and the alley with the houses
Knowing the place, I can easily figure out how you did well with this one
eldancer1 (29403) 2012-11-05 7:20
Very sneaky way to get a candid shot but I agree with you, I don't them to be aware of me photographing them otherwise I will get a pretend expression. Love the pov and it has good dof with nice details even those in the shadow. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.
ourania (33443) 2012-11-05 11:10
there's a fantastic sense of revolving movement in this picture, very vivid, and everyone and everything seems to participate in it: the people in foreground and background, the clouds, even the buildings (an effect that impressed me in your previous photo as well). Your technique must be really exciting, you prepare, pick up a moment, shoot and hope for the best.
The result you got here is amazing because apart from the scene, scenery and effects, you also got expressions that are utterly candid and intriguing. In a fleeting second you captured expressions that viewers will identify with this place and hold in their memories for a long time. Your lighting is perfect for this scene and its atmosphere. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great week,

Thanks for interesting note. Sometimes I try to do the same but with limited success. I like the wiew vrom the down. You have captured the lady very well. It is obvious that she has not see your camera when you have been taking this nice street shot. The blue sky behind add a nice hue to the scene. Well done. have a good week.

Thank you for the detailed comments about how you achieved this photograph. The spirit level never occurred to me: I often have to straighten horizon lines even when I've got the camera to my eye! The distortion inherent in the wide-angle lens is, as you intimate, part of the appeal of this shot, and you're right: it does have the effect of drawing the viewer in. A couple of observations: the backlighting from the bright sky, with the camera tilted up has made the two figures a tad darker than optimum (you could have corrected this in P'shop, but I think you're against this sort of manipulation - as was Ansel Adams, who didn't approve of darkroom tinkering); is that a soldier I see in the background? I'd like to think he too was a pilgrim going clockwise round the stupa!
Nice immediacy from this candid street shot (could be a candidate for monochrome...)
kato (11630) 2012-11-07 10:16
You're capturing well this scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see pilgrims wearing colorful clothes and stole in street. It's impressive in pagoda which looks a few to left-hand side, too. And, everyday life is expressed well that it is a spectacle as many people have gone back and forth.
Have a nice day.
Cricri (108623) 2012-11-07 23:30
Bel effet du grand angle, les personnes en gros plan, le regard sérieux de la dame, la vie quotidienne des personnes dans la rue, une note toujours intéressante, compliment

I find your technique most interesting and intend to try it one day soon. I guess it is very much hit and miss. I notice the wide angle enhances the effect. Well done. Thanks, Marlene

I know well this place and for sure if I will go back in Kathmandou, I will go again as it is a real special place.
I like a lot your shot in wide angle with the face very visible and the stuppa we can recognize in background.
The lady just to go out of the frame is giving movement and dynamism.
Alone this shot is perhaps not enough, but in a serie with a better view of the stuppa, it is just perfect.
