Bauddha Stupa at Bodnath near Katmandu.
Legend of the Construction of the Stupa (from Wikipedia)
"The village that surrounds the great Kāsyapa tower is generally known by the name of Boddha. ...which in Tibetan is called Yambu Chorten Chenpo. Yambu is the general name by which Kāthmāndu is known in Tibet; and Chorten Chenpo means great tower. The real name of the tower in full is, however, Ja Rung Kashol Chorten Chenpo, which may be translated into: "Have finished giving the order to proceed with." The tower has an interesting history of its own which explains this strange name. It is said in this history that Kāsyapa was a Buddha that lived a long time before Shākyamuni Buddha. after Kāsyapa Buddha's demise, a certain old woman, with her four sons, interred this great sage's remains at the spot over which the great mound now stands, the latter having been built by the woman herself. Before starting on the work of construction, she petitioned the King of the time, and obtained permission to "proceed with" building a tower. By the time that, as a result of great sacrifices on the part of the woman and her four sons, the groundwork of the structure had been finished, those who saw it were astonished at the greatness of the scale on which it was undertaken. Especially was this the case with the high officials of the country, who all said that if such a poor old dame were allowed to complete building such a stupendous tower, they themselves would have to dedicated a temple as great as a mountain, and so they decided to ask the King to disallow the further progress of the work. When the King was approached on the matter his Majesty replied: "I have finished giving the order to the woman to proceed with the work. Kings must not eat their words, and I cannot undo my orders now." So the tower was allowed to be finished, and hence its unique name, "Ja Rung Kashol Chorten Chenpo." I rather think, however, that the tower must have been built after the days of Shākyamuni Buddha, for the above description from Tibetan books is different from the records in Samskrt, which are more reliable than the Tibetan."

Hallo Achim.

Hi Achim, my neighbor today!
A very nice wide angle view of Bodnath, looking like polarized (?) I like the way the off centering leads the eye to the sunny part of the town, on top right...
bakes888 (18499) 2008-01-14 0:19

Nice document about this beautiful and impressive place. I like the horizontal format, but I find it a little bit tight at the bottom part (I would like to see all the basis of the Stuppa). The light is superbly managed (it was probably difficult to avoid the over exposure of the white areas?).
Thanks for sharing.
Budapestman (82620) 2008-01-14 0:51

Amazing color, great capture..., light is perfect
robertosalguero (246) 2008-01-14 1:06
This structure is huge. Looking at the buildings around it I get a sense of its size. The white colour also create a sharp contrast to the more colourful buildings on the street. Good light and fine details and the stitching process is flawless. Thanks Achim.

A superb point of view for this absorbing and well lit composition. I like the positioning of the stupa and the inclusion of the curved walkway with its colourful shop fronts, which make a very good contrast against the white. Excellent colours and clarity. Very nice work.

stego (24030) 2008-01-15 16:30
Like many of us, I have seen hundreds of photos of this place, but I had never seen one with such an advantageous POV. Besides being gorgeous, it shows quite effectively the whole stupa and the square where it lies, with its colourful picturesque houses and its life. And all of that with an amazing clarity/sharpness! Quite remarkable!
Congratulations and FTS.
Lieben Gruss, José.
kiwi_explorer (12209) 2008-01-15 22:09
The people certainly gave scale of dimension to the size of this dome ... quite an impressive structure. Very informative notes to describe the event and place. Well captured and presented with very good image quality. Well done! tfs
ChrisJ (99212) 2008-01-16 0:40
Looks like you were lucky with the weather. Blue sky, & almost no smog. A superb high vantage point, with excellent colour contrasts, between the blue & yellow. Good sharpness, too. Tfs!
evanrizo (456) 2008-01-16 4:52
The first think I see here is the excellent illumination, the superb light balance.
The stupa, the construction is impressive.
Have a nice time.
josepmarin (57823) 2008-01-16 6:55
a splendid stitch, with a great graphical result by the panoramic format and the great quality of image.
The Vista that offers to us is magnificent, deep and with an angle that perfectly covers this Stupa and the urban landscape in background, from a good POV.
The light and the colors are very good, is an excellent work.
adores (37541) 2008-01-16 17:27
Wondeful pov of this magic place! It really gives us a very good idea of the place and it's really big.I like to see all those people and the colourful houses around.
Colours are fatastic!
pboehringer (770) 2008-01-17 18:36
an image that recalls good moments in my memories. I have been there at this place and didn't see how to take a comprehensive shot of this place, but it seems that you solved the "Quadratur des Zirkels". Getting up at some of the adjacent buildings and stitching makes all the diference. I have been there 10 years ago and back than I din't have the skills that I have nowadays. Maybe a reason to revisit Kathmandu and the Khumbu.
Stepan (27210) 2008-01-20 0:53
Interesting and original (I don't remember I saw that pov before) view on that stupa. The place seems to be really crazy and wonderful. Thanks for that sensation.
PS : And a good realization of course, especially for the light.
delkoo (68) 2008-01-21 7:03
this summer i should go back to Nepal , i plan to do the Manaslu trek, and i will return to this fantastic place that you have achieved on this shot, your POV is very well managed.
leo61 (0) 2008-01-24 13:10
Nepal steht ziemlich weit oben auf meiner Reisewunschliste.
Ein tiolles Bild dieses gigantischen Stupa und ein guter Kontrast mit den farbenfrohen Fassaden im Hintergrund.
riclopes (35577) 2008-01-24 23:55
Olá Achim, I get allways surprised with the variety of countries shown in your posts and it seems that you are not so far away from finishing painting the whole world map with yellow. By the way, I'm curious about your photos from Laos...This is quite an impressive place and you found a great POV to show this huge Stupa. The people seem so small in there as well as the pretty houses seen at right. Excellent panoramic composition with very good colors.
