As a result of increased population, shifting cultivation, fuelwood extraction and other human activities, the dry zone in Myanmar now expands in an area of about 55,000 square kilometers situated in the lower Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway Division. About 34% of the Myanmar population is living there. When traversing this region one could hardly believe being in south-east asia, more well known for its green rice fields than for its dusty arid areas. Water is very scarce and people are spending a big part of their time and energy looking for water where they can find it. Some make kilometers by foot or with bullock carts rising clouds of dust to fill recipients at the closest well.
Here at a well, just near Bagan. I already posted another picture at the same place earlier.
Note - Many comments suggest a less centered composition with the cattle more to the left. I cannot agree more. Unfortunately this road was bordered with trees which were breaking the nice dusty and golden atmosphere that I wanted to focus on. If I had moved the cattle more to the right, I would have cut the people visible in the dust in the background...

Thanks for showing this good shot from Bagan.I Tried the same with an oxcart but did not manage as well as you did.
Good sharpness at the oxcart( is it one with 4 oxes ore are there 2?)And the dust shows the typical atmoshphere when there is traffic at Bagan`s sandy tracks.Good light at the trees and nice silhouettes in the background.
Have a nice weekend,
lestans (17168) 2007-01-19 17:42
great light and great atmosphera you captured in this shot!
I like very much the contrast between the dust and the sharp details of the trees and of the cart.
Very nice work, bravo!!
Budapestman (82620) 2007-01-19 17:45
This is a very expressive and talkative photo. Its an impressive POV and suggestive composition. Excellent shot.
Thank you, nice days

Pleasant composition even if it center. TFS. regards
sothy81 (9630) 2007-01-19 18:49
Hi Vincent, this is a great shot of transportation people used in Asia. Cambodia too, if you had a chance to travel to rural area. Very nice focus and sharpness. The dust behind made this photo rich in its quality. Nicely done. Sothy
stego (24132) 2007-01-19 19:37
What it lacks in "beauty" is largely compesated by the documental value. Very nice light. All that floating dust enhances the sense of dryness, a real surprise for me, as I had the idea that all that part of the world was rather wet and green, except for the plateaus of North Thailand and Laos (?).
TFS, Amicalement, José.
sarahnatalie (697) 2007-01-19 21:24
Great photo! I too thought the area was lush and green... Anyway, it's a fantastic post for the information you have shared with us and the strong image to accompany it. One hets a sense that it is a hard, hot day. The animals are very beautiful, too. Thanks!
jjcordier (79297) 2007-01-20 1:33
bantonbuju (51815) 2007-01-20 2:53
i like the photos taken with a zoom which "flatten" the third dimension compressing the scene to one layer...effect - intesnifying the cloud of sand...
i'd maybe go for a less central composition but still i do like this image a lot...
anducina (8407) 2007-01-20 4:11
Excellent compo and framing, but what I like best is this special dusty light.
delkoo (68) 2007-01-20 4:15
Graal (103034) 2007-01-20 4:39
interesting view here and in previous from this place. Good note. Fine reportage, really life in Myanmar. I like it.
Wanda1 (15142) 2007-01-20 5:40
A good daily life shot, I like the dust adding to the dry feeling, and the ghostly shadow of the boy in the dust. Sharpness and composition are great.
ahmetgedikli (25605) 2007-01-20 5:42
Wonderful shot! Great daily life capture, exposure and composition are very good. and captured. The light is excellent. Great work!
Have a nice weekend.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2007-01-20 5:56
I did not know that Myanmar has water problems. I was told that the rainy season is very wet. That road to Bagan is from where? Is it easy to travel by road? I am thinking from Sittwe to Bagan and Mandalay. Your picture shows very well how this country stopped many years ago. Very nice colours and a great POV. Well done.
Paolo (41222) 2007-01-20 8:46
Hi Vincent, amaizng image with all that dust in the background.
excellent exposure, composition and quality.
Silvio1953 (146681) 2007-01-20 8:58
Hi Vincent, fastinating composition of daily life with wonderful light and colors, very well done, ciao Silvio
ChrisJ (116098) 2007-01-20 9:12
Good daily life shot of the oxen. I like the obscured outline of the man in the dust at right. Well framed. Merci!
sabyasachi1212 (19779) 2007-01-20 10:00
These unmetalled roads may not be the best ones for the travellers but they never fail to provide the avid photographers with excellent photo opportunities. I had just critqued one of Leo's photos also from Myanmar with a very similar perspective, I guess you know which one. Splendid work!
With Greetings from India
Mistral (15402) 2007-01-20 10:47
you captured very well a moment of the burmese daily life. The dust add a lot of mood and give an idea of the place there.
A smile and have a nice weekend!
john_c (24666) 2007-01-20 12:27
You caught this one at the decisive moment, and the dust not only enhances the scene but speaks to the issue of water supply and long distance travel referenced in your fine note. I like the background trees here, as well as the apparition like figures seen in the dust. Very well captured, Vincent.
tcht (7565) 2007-01-20 13:47
Lovely documentary of daily life, and I've not seen interesting transports like this before. That boy behind the mist makes the composition even stronger. I think perhaps you could crop the left slightly, so to bring the oxen transport off-center and the person behind mist more into the frame, but it works fine as it is now. TFS!
athos99 (6894) 2007-01-20 14:38
cunejo200 (7281) 2007-01-20 19:32
Oh those cows sure did leave a dusty trail. Good sharpness on the cows and water seekers. Excellent work. Cheers! Danilo
Gerrit (52097) 2007-01-21 5:22
beautiful daily life picture in the dust with extra qualities like the mans looking to the horizon like in a western movie. Great light in the background trees.
markstaples (15670) 2007-01-21 6:58
France (125) 2007-01-21 8:42
Very beautiful picture of daily life, Vincent.
The exposure is well done and the cloud of dust give a soft atmosphere. I like the position of men and beasts. A very well composed picture.
jhm (155276) 2007-01-21 12:46
I find this picture better that your previous image, here we see more detailed picture, I like very much the contrast between the dust and the sharp details of the trees and of the cart, also the silhouette of the man in background care for a nice composition.
Merci pour le partage.
Angelillo (9374) 2007-01-21 16:19
It's possible to feel the dust, I like a lot the blurred people in the background, like shadows. It's a great sign of the real life. The main character, the chariot, the cows and the people are amazing too, great sharp, interesting subjetc of dayli life and hard works, for take some so useful and necessary like water! Truly amazing. Thanks,
ben4321 (9875) 2007-01-21 16:35
This is great Vincent, and the light shining through the dust kicked up by the hooves of the oxen gives this a wonderful atmosphere.
I'm not sure about the central placement of the ox cart though, maybe this would have worked better with it positioned further to the left of the frame.
It's a great shot though, well done.
SamB (1948) 2007-01-21 17:20
Nice work on this one, the atmosphere is really great, and the dust emphasizes your point about the dryness. i think that this one would have been better if you had taken it more to the right, pulling the cattle all the way out to the left and showing more of the distance behind. This would give a stronger impression of distance travel and emphasize the depth at right.
sebinho342 (19317) 2007-01-21 17:48
clnaef (6289) 2007-01-22 2:14
Belle composition bien équilibrée.
vonp (2235) 2007-01-22 2:38
You took a really great shot.
The color and the composition are so natural and the immage quality is perfect.
A real piece of life; congratulation!
See you soon...
Angshu (56760) 2007-01-22 4:04
Great effect of light...the lack of water creates all the dust & sand, which as is blowing here, provides, a beautiful setting for a pic. I think I can see 4 bullocks, so are there two carts?
coco (30439) 2007-01-22 7:29
Technically is not bad and also you captured the photo in the right moment.
The worst is than may be is too centered.
Even then, a nice work.
(i've read what you say about the centered composition)
alainh (33201) 2007-01-22 17:10
tres belle image
sebcz (2345) 2007-01-22 17:47
I enjoy this photo. It has some action, the dust beaten up from the road, the man's expression, quality and definition just great.
AiresSantos (56155) 2007-01-23 6:03
Great capture, magnificent atmosphera. Excellent details, colours and light.
Very well done
TFS and greetings
Flavia (10352) 2007-01-23 11:36
pastadog (13111) 2007-01-23 15:53
Hi Vincent, a strong daily life scene captured very well; excellent exposure, esp. in the area with shadows, that looks excellent and we clearly see the details. The centered compo doesn't bother me, on the contrary, there's a subtle partial symmetry due to the oxes, which I find appealing. Regards, Daniel
TeresaT (10806) 2007-01-23 17:51
Fantastic daily life compostion of the rurla life.
All this dust create a nice atmosphere.
The light is perfect too.
jafadabret (56501) 2007-01-24 4:43
carper (96) 2007-01-24 5:46
a very good photo here vincent what a great atmosphere in the shot, personal I would crop it from the left too put the subject not in the middle, but thats personal, farther very good job.
VeeJayCee (2410) 2007-01-24 17:08
This is superb Vincent! I agree with you that to lose the people on the left would spoil this image and lose much of the atmosphere. Rules are made to be broken and this time it is right to break the rules. I love the way the cattle and cart seem to be emerging from their dust cloud. Excellent! I have no points left today but if I remember I shall be back tomorrow.
ephemere33 (9743) 2007-01-24 17:20
vagabondtravels (6511) 2007-01-26 20:12
Nice central comp. Spot on with the exposure and sharp.
I like the boy walking in the dust. Well done.
Stepan (27210) 2007-01-27 3:17
cessy (13647) 2007-01-27 6:10
very nice capture of this cart with the dust all over (I hope your camera didn't get the dust :) )
excellent angle and composition
vinicio (23423) 2007-01-29 2:06
this image is really beautiful, good composition and good daily life image, but over all the dust cloud give to the image one wonderful atmosphere, well seen and done, compliments.
Have a good week
ElAprendiz (30) 2007-01-31 13:37
Scene with very good composition, resists and definition.
It is remarkable to appreciate like the animals and the subject, excels the others first of all.
Vato_Law (12724) 2007-01-31 14:27
Great daily life shot with this old mean of transportation well presented. Love the atmosphere of this photo with the dust and the light creating a strange feeling.
I love the many details we might see on this photo.
capthaddock (28790) 2007-02-02 13:41
Hi Vincent - OK I won't mention the centering, because I agree that the dusty atmosphere is what brings it to attention, nice and authentic slice of daily life.
everlasting (15238) 2007-02-03 12:25
Great daily life shot Vince, the centered bullock cart doesnt bother me, the off center people in the mist makes the composition.
Standa (1877) 2007-02-07 16:46
realy fine shot. I like this atmosphere.
dilane (861) 2007-03-02 17:57
banyanman (7789) 2007-03-04 8:36
This is a wonderful image, Vincent, that captures the dry and dusty atmosphere of this region very well. Excellent focus and DOF. You could have got around the centering issue that a few have mentioned by cropping a little from the left and bottom, but then we would not have seen so much of the dirt road which is an integral part of this image. Cheers . . . David
aznegrao (10316) 2007-03-11 8:31
Fantastic shot. The colors are nice, and atmosphere is fantastic. Great work.
jmhullot (0) 2007-03-12 4:43
stevesaba (8165) 2007-05-08 9:37
I just noticed this one, among your "Best". I just had to leave a comment. This is such a classic picture....really superb. Best wishes,
kdialyna (3148) 2007-05-23 4:39
Good morning Fincent.
I looked your photo-gallery and I found it extraordinary.
This photo from you is really the perfect supplement of your note.
You achieve to give perfect the sense of lack of water in the region and the big problem which the people they have there.
Excellent photo .
noborders (1010) 2007-11-04 6:01
Disabled_A (0) 2009-03-21 15:37
this is a very dynamic scene! Interesting, good composition. Actually, I do not mind a centered composition (which, maybe, is against photo rules :))
Excellent contrast between the cart and the "glowing" clouds of dust behind it! the people in the BG look like phantoms appearing out of nowhere... or disappearing?
MLINES (12516) 2009-10-10 13:36
Hi Vincent, A very fine image, the dust and the intensity on the man's face is what i first noticed. The plodding cattle and the composition are wonderful to see on TE. TFS. Murray.
