Seeing Bagan during sunrise is truelly unforgettable exprerience, so some tourist chose to fly around in baloons. I didnt do it myself, but I believe it must be truelly great experience.
Bagan, more popularly know as the city of four million pagodas and temples, the Birth Place of Therabardha buddhism is located on the eastern bank of Majestic Ayeyawaddy River. It is only a forty two square kilo meters land which is confined by over 2500 Pagodas and temples. In former days as well as now, the pilgrims are allowed to climb on the top vestibules or terrace from where view the mystical panorama of Bagan. Some of the biggest pagodas were closed for climbing, but there is still sufficient number of them to enjoy the view from.
Balloon Over Bagan
As Marco polo described "one of the finest sights in the world" now visitors to Myanmar can view the unique and enchanting view of the 11th century ruin as it has never been seen before. Imagine floating over thousands year old pagodas and the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River, as the sun sinks slowly behind distant mountains. Balloons over Bagan provide visitors a unique opportunity to see this ancient kingdom, as it never has been before. The sunrise and sunset champagne flights last just under one hour and take off daily from October through to the end of March.
The balloon is guided by gentle winds not exceeding 15 mph, allowing passengers a serene and bird's-eye view of ancient temples drifting by using his skill the pilot is able to guide the balloon to a gentle landing on the banks of Ayeyarwaddy River, or in an open field, where the crew and the celebratory glass of champagne will be on hand. Te Balloon over Bagan service operates twice daily early in the morning just before sunset and late in the evening just before sunset between late October and April.
And just to let you know price is - US$240 per person.. (btw average salary in Myanmar is 10-20$ a month/goverenment, and around 40$ a month in private sector)

Deke (708) 2005-11-30 8:56
I really like how the balloons resemble the towers, as if they have just broken off and floated away. Lovely tranquil morning mood and allows one to imagine what it might be like to be in one of the ballons.

Clairedelune (4923) 2005-11-30 9:09
Without the baloons, it would have been already a good picture. So with them, it's very special. What a nice play of light and shadow. There are so many pagodas! Incredible! At least for me. I like the almost monochrome tone of the picture, except some small patches of pink, red, yellow. Good framing and composition. Very well done Lucie!

riclopes (35577) 2005-11-30 9:22
SUPERB shot Lucie!
Flying in baloons, must a unique experience, but also very expensive. I tried to do it in Capadocia, this summer, but I didn't have enough money, so what I did was taking pictures every morning of the baloons passing by.
Anyway, the layers of this picture are just fabulous! The contrasts in this marvellous lighting are very well captured and those ballons sure add a plus to the ambiance, making us think how would it be. Congratulations for the good work and thanks for sharing,

Excellent game of shades here, Lucie.
I like the picture very much, and the mongolfières look unreal in this landscape...

starbug (6924) 2005-11-30 11:43
wow, there's so much to write about the photo, it's amazingly composed...baloons? they might seem out of place in an old, traditional place like that, and yet they ft so perfectly to the shapes of the temples. the temples themselvs are wonderfully divided into several layers...those that seem solid in the front, and those that melt into the mist...there arebeautiful, nostalgic colours...I love it!
simonekarl (404) 2005-11-30 12:15
This is quite an amazing picture, considering the difficult light. This place looks simply wonderful and the addtion of the balloons a real special moment captured.

The balloons and spires make a wonderful contrast and composition. Good job.
Janice (4403) 2005-11-30 14:03
Wow Lucie, this is great. I love the colours and the different tones show up the distances of the towers and trees and the balloons. Wonderful composition, thank you.
dolin (15703) 2005-11-30 14:34
Ohhhhh superbes ces différences de tonalité à chaque profondeur.
C'est bien cadré et équilibré en plus.
On se croirait un peu dans un rêve avec cette ambiance et ces teintes.

wowzer! ... well done!
spence (65) 2005-12-01 0:41
A beautifully balanced composition, Lucie. The shape of the balloons is so sympathetic to the shape of the pagodas, and the whole scene is wrapped in this magical mist, giving it a surreal and mystical effect. Wonderful. I must say I would not have added a frame to this myself - I don't think it needs it.
desman (2220) 2005-12-01 2:56
J'aime beaucoup, bravo !
everlasting (14698) 2005-12-01 5:16
Bagan at any time of the day is pleasent, but sunrise and sunset are special. I saw advertisments for these balloons, pretty expensive $200 per person includign breakfast.
Well if you had been in the balloon we wouldnt have had this shot:)
Well composed and very good use of light and the mist, magical moment.
peck (2779) 2005-12-01 7:31
Very nice piture... nice framing and ligt.
capthaddock (28790) 2005-12-01 10:20
Hi Lucie - wow, the baloons look so out of place in such a timeless view, an ideally balanced composition of a forest of padogas.
Graal (100526) 2005-12-02 4:41
fantastic view. I like it a lot. Nice atmosphere and good composition. Interesting note. Well done.
Stepan (27210) 2005-12-05 13:49

Very impressive composition.
mikee (2354) 2005-12-20 13:12
Another great "contre jour" photo of this place. It is absolutely impressive and it looks like another world, especially with the baloons up in the air. Your composition is spectacular. Well done.
ballyna (1689) 2006-01-16 14:45

Mistral (15402) 2006-01-25 17:53
this is a place I love and I find in this misty morning, watching at these temples one behind the other, the atmosphere I keep deeply in my intimate. The small bells ringing, the birds singing and the breath of Irrawaddy. The horse cart swaying and the silence of the countryside. All these things are not in your photo but with it you switched on all of them in me. A smile.
KellEy (1237) 2006-02-19 20:13
Mystical, magical, magnificant!
Everything about this is enchanting.
royh (581) 2006-02-20 21:47
Truly remarkable shot, you did a great job capturing the greenery in the foreground, and I like how the balloons are really similar color to the temples. Really beautiful place - TFS.

klyee75 (778) 2006-09-20 21:03
This is good...very well captured the 2 balloons at the same time lift to the air and a mystical moment.
I like the almost monochrome tone of the picture, except some small patches of pink.
