I could have called this photo "A Mesmerizing Encounter"...
I was visiting a small and remote temple outside the tourist circuit in Bagan, when I saw an old monk sitting alone on a stone wall and I approached him to chat a little, presuming he was quite lonesome.
Through the discussion, he let me know that he was living by himself for many years, and as I was manifesting my curiosity, he invited me to his place.
What a surprise to visit his tiny house where he was secluded, devoting his life to praying and... manipulating puppets! As he made me promise that I would keep the secret, he told me that his father was a master puppeteer, and although he wasn't supposed to entertain himself as a monk, he was cultivating this art form received from his father.
It was enchanting to see how his face lit up with childlike enthusiasm as he executed himself while putting on a show just for me!
Meeting this very old monk who kept his skill and hobby as a secret from the others became a highlight of this trip, as I felt privileged to meet such a singular and special person.

That's a fret. I see the photo of a wooden boat with a tilted horizon receiving a ton of positive comments whilst this dazzling and poignant photo remains ignored ? This image could appear in any given photo magazine for the brilliant composition and the unusual subject, but above all for the halo of light that creates a silhouette of the hand from the puppeteer. Your gallery is like photo lessons of matchless quality. Slán!

The image alone sparks emotion, and your note greatly increases the intrigue and wonderment. I very much wanted to see this monks face, but upon further reflection and analysis of this photo, I think it is very helpful to leave some to the imagination and let the picture tell the story in conjunction with your experience.
An unexpected surprise all around, this is really an original concept and portrayal of local custom and culture with a personal twist. Very well done, this has great appeal! Enjoy your weekend.

This beautiful image makes me feel like a child again, it has such a great playful mood as well as a theatrical feel. The dappled light creates two natural important spots of light, one highlighting the hand and creating that great shadow and the other creating a direct spotlight on the puppet its self as it turns to life in the hands of this unusual puppeteer. What a heart warming story to accompany the shot too. Love it!

I saw a show with these puppets when I was there! I like the idea, the composition is very good and the light is magical. I really like the shadow of the hand.

Very interesting and evocative photo which let my imagination to fly! It is exceptional to leave the head out of the photo but it works....the marionette doll gets all my attention and he is a star! Light and shadow play is also nice. Thanks for sharing this photo.
