Joss House
Today’s posting is about the temple roof decorations of the largest Chinese joss house (Bohn Kyaung) in Yangon. It is located in Kaba Eye Pagoda Road, near the Sedona Hotel, where I did stay while in Yangon.
Joss house or Miu is a place for worshiping a variety of indigenous Chinese deities, saints and supernatural beings from Taoist, Buddhism, Confucianism heroes and folklores. Joss house is usually translated as temple, although it was in common use in English in western North America during frontier times, when joss houses were a common feature of places with Chinatowns. Joss houses are distinct from Taoist temples and Buddhist monasteries in that they are established by nearby villagers or fishermen to pray for good luck; only few or none of monks, nuns or priests study religion or stay in joss houses. Joss houses are usually small houses decorated with traditional figures on their roofs although some evolve into significant structures.
The name "joss house" describes the environment of worship. Joss sticks, a kind of incense, are burned inside and outside of the house. The Chinese character 廟 (Miu in Cantonese) means "ancestor hall", a place to worship ancestors. It was later extended to places for worshipping others.
As they are not large established institutions, most joss houses in mainland China were destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. However, they can still be found everywhere in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Tin Hau (or Amah) is one of the most popular deities in South China.

Bonjour Antonio

Beau travail.

Muito bonita, António. Ambas as fotos, aliás.

Hi Antonio,
I like very much the detailed photograph of this roof. Colours are superb and also the sky and the bird just flying. I prefer this one than the second one, although you have a much better view of this peculiar roof.

As cores fortes davam alegria e felicidade a quem lá entrava...

Hi Antonio,
Yes it is a splendid roof, the intricate detail in the carving and the decoration is wonderful. I like the strong saturated colours against the blue sky and the offset composition certainly gives the image a "I want to see more" look. Interesting the way the tree appears to be growing from the edge of the roof, must have deep gutters, just kidding.
Lovely informative capture and thank you for the excellent note.

Olá António,
You know I'm hard-pressed to choose between this primary post and your WS. The WS has better detail but this one has the balance of that splendid diagonal roof line with a tree growing out of the roof. The two photos complement each other well and the note is very informative.

Hi, Tony -
While this view in interesting (and has the whimsical tree as well as the bird), I think the WS is a better photo; it uses a less standard angle and has more detail. Both photos do give a very good representation of the culture and its art form.
Best,

Hi Antonio:
Both this work as the WS are great.
At this stage front, doing well and is a great idea to capture a portion of the roof, which allows us to appreciate a beautiful ornamentation, in contrast with the softness and dim sky.
The shapes and colors, are highly prized and own style of the East.

Hi Antonio,
Both shots have captured the intricacy of the roof very well and with very natural looking colours. In my honest opinion, I prefer the workshop, just because it has some diagonal lines and a slight bit more dynamism to it that this composition, but both have something to offer.

Bien hecha.
