Maha Wizaya Pagoda

This is a photo taken in late afternoon on the only day I had a couple hours free for a quick visit to Yangon after a heavy rainy day and before sunset. So I decided to go straight to Maha Wizaya Pagoda which I had spotted last year while going to down town Yangon. It is located near the south gate of Shwedagon Pagoda and it is worth the visit.

In WS you can see a closer view of one of the lions decorating the outside of the stupa.

The Maha Wizaya Pagoda is a bell-shaped paya (meaning holy place in Burmese) built in 1980 to commemorate the successful unification of the diverse Theravada Buddhist orders into one and for the perpetuation and propagation of the Sansana (teaching of the Buddha). It is located on Dhammarakkhita (Guardian of the Law) Hill which faces the old and famous Shwedagon Pagoda. Maha Wizaya was built from funds donated by the people across the whole country. An image of the Buddha which was a royal gift from the King and Queen of Nepal is enshrined within the pagoda.

The pagoda is well laid out in spacious grounds. The approach and entry is done by a central bridge between two fish and turtle ponds, each containing a covered island onto which the creatures can climb and take respite.

All styles of traditional decorative art, executed by modern artists and artisans, grace this shrine and testify to the preservation of a national culture developed through the ages. This pagoda is hollow and displays a model of all famous Myanamr pagodas. It also depicts the Myanmar constellations on the ceiling. However, the most interesting architectural feature is a specially designed hole on the ceiling that only permits the sunlight to inside on a single day every year. That day is the Myanmar New Year Day according to the lunar calendar. The Maha Wizaya Pagoda is always crowded with local worshippers on the Myanmar New Year Day.
