Photographer's Note
This is a view of downtown Rangoon showing Paya Sule in the middle and new concrete buildings aroung it. The building behind paya Sule is a luxury hotel and office building, the one on the left is a mixed use building.
Rangoon still retains a backwater colonial charm in its downtown streets, but this is changing: modern souless concrete buildings are springing up everywhere. How will it take until all the charm is lost?

Usually, it doesnt take long in poorer cities like Rangoon. There isnt any real concern for the aesthetics of a city, no control, no regulations. Cities like this get destroyed by these concrete weeds within several years. Heres a great example of this destruction. truly, those concrete weeds are truly ugly. The old building is so beautiful. Its a real shame. I just commented on a photo showing the construction of tall buildings in Paris. Atleast in Paris the talls are segregated, and dont destroy the beautiful old neigborhoods. Your photo really raises an important issue. How many beautoful cities will be destroyed by these ugly concrete monsters?

How long will it take? Well, longer than if it had been ruled by the people. It seems that all these large Asian cities want to look westernized for some reason. A real shame.
A good reminder to see it now if you can before the architectural ambiance goes kaput.
Great Job.
Aloha, JB
