Photographer's Note

Schwedagon Pagoda and several surrounding shrines in the early morning.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to appreciate the scale of this shrine in this particular image. The footprint of the central chedi alone is, perhaps, the size of a large city block, and requires approximately 20-30 minutes to walk around (without taking photos). Surrounding the chedi are hundreds of shrines of various sizes and importance.

Schwedagon is the most sacred site in all of Burma, and attracts hundreds if not thousands of worshippers from throughout the country every day. It is well-worth visiting in the early morning, and during the later part of the day and evening.

From a Fuji Velvia slide scanned at 14-bit on Coolscan V ED and then processed (cropped and resampled) in PSC3.
