Pagodas are unique landmarks of Myanmar. In no other country can you find such manifestation of devotion demonstrated by Myanmar Buddhists. No hill is so high, no valley so deep, no forest so dense, no plain barren as to prevent a pious Buddhist to build a pagoda of glittering gold or snow-white coat, no matter how large or small. No work of merit is believed to be so richly rewarded as building and donating a pagoda for the propagation of Buddhist faith.

History has recorded that Myanmar enjoyed prosperity as early as the Bagan Dynasty, principally during the reigns of the first Myanmar Emperor King Anawratha (1044-1077) and King Kyansittha (1084-1112), popularly known as Bagan Golden Age. It also witnessed another gold, i.e. the golden age of pagoda building. In that age of rote, where Myanmar and Pali literature was preserved to memory by word of mouth, rhyme or verse is the easiest way to remember things by. Thus the number of Bagan pagodas in the 42 square Kilometers of land was recorded in rhyming couplets. Where each ward represented a digit the first four words were meant to be reckoned as 4446. But the common legend extended to seven digits inflating the numbers to millions. Thus it is not surprising that Bagan is often called "the city of four million pagodas." The Myanmar Archeology Department recorded 2217 pagodas today...

Here at sunrise, the morning after my late arrival the night before. I was lucky enough to stay in old Bagan. Just had to walk out of my hotel, just by myself, silence all around...

Classical shot maybe, but unforgettable personal experience.

Hello Vincent,

Hi Vincent,

Great pics of the pagodas. You captured it just right when they where almost in shadows. And the balloon does make a great contrast. TFS!

Hi Vincent,
great view, good captured a moment with the flying balloon, unusual mood and beautiful morning landscape. I like it.

Bonjour Vincent,
Bonne journee,
Jean-Yves

hi Vincent,
This is truely a fascinating photo. The colors of the sky is wonderful, the pagodas are also looking great. Good POV and nice framing. Also the baloon in the distant sky is a bonus.
Best regards
Sayan

Hi Vincent!

Your whole work in Myanmar is excellent. Probably this one is the most impressive, because you share with us the magic colours of sunset but also the wonderful shapes of the pagodas. Excellent "bonus" detail, the baloon in the sky. Congratulations!

Salut Vincent

Yes, this is a simple but stunning shot and a nice glimpse inside Burma. It shows how big Bhuddism was once in Burma.

I actually like your original version a bit more than the workshop version as I like the subtle tonality here.

You might try the healing brush to get rid of those 2 tiny spots in the sky....a small thing.

Well done,
Aloha, JB

Salut Vincent,

Amicalement. Christian

Hello Vincent! Just beautiful! It's such a strong composition with a line of pagodas appearing to recede a long the diagonal of the frame into the sun. And the baloon is just an added surprise. Your note is wonderful too!

TFS
Doug

Hi Vincent,
There are a lot pictures from Bagan here on TE, but everytime i am impressed of this beautiful city.
If you make the foreground a bit darker then you have perfect contrast to the bright upper part.
Nevertheless a very nice picture....well done.
Regards, Henk

Wow Vincent. The soft early morning light does wonders for your photograph. Slight pinks and oranges. The balance between the sun and the balloon rising up is very nice. Also, the downward point of the balloon contrasts nicely with the upward points of the pagodas. Good perspective andthe line of the pagodas adds depth to the shot.
Regards,
Chris.

A great panoramic view of Bagan. You have caught the light and atmosphere of sunrise very well. The ballon in the ske also add a touch of interest. regards kevin

Wow, dream time.. Excellent perspective and beautiful light as well! Regards, Doug

Hi Vincent,

Hello,
Extraordinary view with magic colours of sunrise.I like the baloon that gives the sense of the great space here.
very artistic.
Good job,
Regards,

A classic shot nevertheless and I enjoyed the morning colors. A almost similar place like this where you can spend the night at the doorstep of such a splendid place in is Borobodur Indonesia.

I would like to have seen the bigger pagodas at the background instead of having them blocked by the smaller pagodas. Was there any opportunity to get a different angle to this shot?

Hi Vincent
An impressive scene. The depth is superb and the atmosphere is fantastic, very warm and pleasant tones + lighting makes this an enjoyable pic. Only improvement needed is the slightly overexposed sun, perhaps some 'HDR' work could've prevented that. Beautiful work!
Cheers

Hello Vincent
I don't know how I could have missed this old post of yours. Always fascinated by Bagan, even though I never visited it. Is it the Thatbyinnyu temple that we see just below the sun? Excellent pastel colours in this scane which would remain in my memory for long.
Friendly Regards
Angshu
